50% of the reason I bought a Diesel pickup when I moved to oregon is so I could pump my own fuel(got a cardlock account too since many retail stations still won't let you pump diesel yourself even if it is legal). The other 50% is that I wanted a Diesel, needed a pickup, and it gets much better fuel mileage than my old SUV.
 
I went to fill up my truck the other day. The guy did not clean the windshield, or check the oil, did not check the tires, then over filled the tank and lost the gas cap.



Worst part was it was a self service station.

But they don't have to pump their own gas. The new law does not require gas stations to eliminate full-service, it allows them to do so.

Back in the day there was one station in my one-horse town that had full service. They got lots of business during cold snaps like this one.
 
I grew up in NJ where it is still "illegal" to pump your own gas. I did it lots, as did many people, when the attendant was busy with other customers and I didn't want to wait. It is really illegal in name only. NJ gas used to always be on the quite cheap end, even with full service, due to the port of Newark. A few years ago the gas tax was raised and it is now more in line with the national average.

My mother in law doesn't like to pump her own diesel. She drives out of her way to go to a full service station, pays the extra pennies and tips the kid who runs the pump.

So the guy from SoCal goes up to Portland to look for a house. He doesn't want to look like a Californian since they hate those people coming up and driving their property values up. (wth)

He's getting ready to return the car and stops for gas. While he's filling it up the attendant says "When are you going back to California?" and the guy asks "How did you know where I was from?"

Attendant says "you pumped your own gas."

All that aside, it's nice that Oregon is no longer "protecting" one of the ****tiest jobs you can ever have. Not only is it a ****ty job, it's typically minimum wage. It's not as if these pump jockeys are starting off to eventually be mechanics, make a decent wage, and bicker on PoA. <- didn't see that one coming, did ya?

Now when the "follow me" golf cart shows up at PUB I just park at the terminal. Two heavyset bearded dudes just don't entice me to buy their gas...

Late 80s pretty girls in short shorts did the same at an FBO in KLEX. They didn't fuel planes either!

We still have a handful of full service stations in Tulsa and surrounding areas. I’ve never used their services, but I haven’t noticed any scantily clad girls out there. Might make a good business opportunity, lol.

Stopped there for fuel on my solo xc back in the day. Nice little FBO. :)

I remember running into this nonsense in Klamath Falls a few decades ago. Pulled into a gas station, waited for the attendant and when he didn't show up I got out to pump my own gas. That's when he showed up and darned near broke my arm while telling me that it was illegal to pump your own gas in Oregon. I had Colorado plates on the car back then, so it's not just Californians who try to pump their own in Oregon.
 
I have been to oregon several times and have always pumped my own fuel. I guess Kansas plates, lots of gun stickers, a very obnoxious red heeler and looking rather disheveled after days on the road kept the fuel nazis away from me. I never knew that Oregon was a full service state. Always thought NJ was the one and only. I pump my own gas there too. I don't do full service fuel.

Governments...
In British Columbia, Canada the law says you must pre-pay for fuel purchases. This law was brought in some years ago after a gas bar attendant was run over and killed by a "gas and dash". All fine and dandy. You get out of your car and stick your card in the reader on the pump, and then fill up. Simple.

But two Districts in the Vancouver area ban self-serve gas stations (one says they are a safety issue, the other says it supports youth employment). So now you get to hand your card to the mandatory attendant and tell them your PIN number. Either that or you get out of the vehicle to do the prepayment yourself and climb back in while the youthfully employed safely sticks the nozzle in the filler opening for you.
You can't make this stuff up.

Serious question: what was the reasoning behind government protection of full service fueling in NJ/OR? I could imagine OR trying to justify it on environmental concerns of spilled fuel or something, but I've never been able to figure what NJ's reason might have been aside from if there was a large full-service attendant union that lobbied for it, lol.

When I was working my way through college, I had several jobs working in full service gas stations. I learned many useful skills there, like mounting tires to rims and running a tow truck. I always did most of my own auto repair and having access to a trained mechanic was very helpful to me. The experience helped me get my first job out of college (Foreman in a major trucking company repair division). That job also sucked, but it did open the way for further advancement and career changes.

Minimum wage jobs are not supposed to be a life career. They are supposed to be a starting point and proving ground.

Official reason is 'fire safety'. Reality is 'jobs program for the otherwise unemployable'.

In NJ the law was the result of some backroom dealings involving a cartel of gas station owners trying to block out an upstart who undercut them on price.

Alright children, we're reopening this thread after deleting a number of posts as we got multiple reports from this thread.

Normally I'd make some sort of talk about "You kids, get along!" But in this case the posts reported (and deleted) had two major components worth noting:

1) A poster made a post in violation of the RoC and that was locker room esque in nature. The MC doesn't condone this and we've issued violations for this in the past.
2) Another poster called out the first poster, and in doing so ended up making posts in violation of the RoC as well. The MC doesn't condone this, either, and we've issued violations for this in the past, too.

We still have a few (not many, just a few) people who like to push the limits of what the mods will tolerate on this forum. It's gotten worse recently, and the banhammer will be used if need be. Stop pushing the boundaries. Oh, and if you like to push the boundaries, don't be surprised if someone besides the MC doesn't like what you're posting.

And to those who see people pushing the limits or otherwise violating , hit "report" and let us wield the banhammer. We don't see everything that's posted, we don't read every thread or every post. Despite popular belief, we have lives so we miss a lot of what goes on here. Maybe that's part of the appeal of pushing the boundaries, but we're getting pretty sick of it.

If this thread descends either into name calling again or debates over this post, then we'll lock it permanently and issue warnings with points.

Which makes perfect sense as fueling an airplane is a bit more complex and marginally more dangerous than fueling your cars so of course let anyone do it. o_O
 
I just hope those deleted posts were not highly offensive for if they were, I'd be offended that you removed them before I had a chance to see them.

Indeed they weren't. But that's about all that's left these days since most of the "real jobs" are now across the Pacific. People working full time need to earn a wage that allows them to survive without 2 people working two or three jobs each. Minimum wage needs to be adequate to at least allow people survive if both are working ONE job.

And I would contend that it takes more skill to work a minimum wage customer facing job at McD's or Wally World than it does to work an $80,000/yr (at least) job on the line at GM putting freakin' windshields in Tahoes.
