Officials Weighed Shooting at Errant Plane

But I know in spite of the actual reality, none of us with rational minds WANTS or would welcome any spectacular scenario involving GA or any other of thousands of POSSIBLE threats. Let's never forget, that the ongoning trouble caused for GA by the 911 fallout was not even by acts committed by GA but, the escalating troubles for us at this point HAVE been caused in significant part by GA.

And that is exactly why the book should be thrown at these folks.

IF a GA plane is brought down, my bet would be immediate and severe consequences for the entire GA community. There would be much public hue and cry, and the security policy makers would continue to believe that a threat exists. The FAA would then be placed in a position to ground or severely restrict GA.

I think we have yet to see the other shoe drop on this one.

Mayor Daley wants an ADIZ over all major cities; AGAIN! With CLASS B airspaces around most major airports, this means there is controlled airspace over most major cities already. How does either an ADIZ or a CLASS B airspace protect major cities? The airspace is controlled or supposed to be. Breaches can and will still occur. It's not the airspace. Those who play by the rules don't really have a problem with speed limits, stop lights, police or airspace restrictions. If you are bent on criminal behavior, anything can be your tool, anything can be your target.
I can carry more ordanance in my SUV than in most planes. Put a trailer on it, and I could probably carry more than a WWII bomber. And an SUV is a whole llot easier to steal. Forget the Pipers and the Cessnas. Get me a GMC Sierra!

I'm sure terrorists will be making sure they don't infringe on any new or existing airspace restrictions...

More airspace restrictions would control most of the pilots and their aircraft that pay attention, meaning the vast majority of legal pilots. But just like gun control or drunk driving laws, only the good people obey them regularly.

It's still true; Airplanes, guns & cars don't kill people -people kill people, with anything they can.

You seem to be trying to apply logic to da Mayor's actions. Haven't seen that work much within his stompin grounds. 'Motions seem to be what he uses to rouse folks up. Logic, hell, what's dat!!

No. Mayor Daley doesn't have a clue, couldn't get one if he dowsed himself in clue ferimones and danced naked amoung a tribe of horney clues!
My point is we already have restricted airspaces over 17 major cities plus many lesser cities which require not only ATC contact but permission to enter. Still we see violations. Most do not cause the wave of panic seen last week, but I'd hazard a guess that ATC has their share of violations which are explained by wrong freq, Altitude set incorrectly, or compass precession. More airspace restrictions wll not decrease violations.
Daley still hasn't paid for what he did to Meigs and probably never will unless Illinois or the FAA require him to rebuild Meigs. He did what he did for profit; we just haven't clearly found the cashed check.

THere are some companies that have profited from Daley's action. See who is profiting from the temporary amphitheater up there.

And isn't that shame on us ? The ammunition for continuing the restrictions that we all say are unneccesary, is provided on a daily basis by our own people. The more we violate, the more the restrictions, the more the violations - a cycle that only we can break.

It's up to US to make sure we give people like Da Mare no more reason to restrict our freedoms any more than they already do otherwise I can see Flight Plans and discrete squawk codes becoming mandatory before long.

Uh, Steve, are you saying is was US who caused Daley to bulldoze Meigs or to ask for the TFR he wanted originally? Was it US who got the TFR for Mickey, the NFL, NASCAR, MLB?

These were all motivated by money and politics which have nothing to do with GA.

Like Steve says, We give them the "ammunition" to propagate and expand these ludicrous and in-effective airspace restrictions that were of course originally motivated by political response to public fear and an irrational acceptance of mere gestures by both, in the name of the illusive security they seek in vain.

I couldn't agree more.

No Richard, thats not what I'm saying :)

I agree with you - the way the TFRs were implemented was a joke, and more motivated by money and politics than genuine security concerns. No argument from me.

The only way to remove those restrictions, is to show they aren't necessary. Unfortunately, every time someone violates the restriction, there are a bunch of fingers pointing out that thats exactly why we need the restrictions because what if it had been a terrorist etc etc.

It doesn't matter that the restriction itself is essentially pointless, or that the plane couldn't do any significant damage, or the pilot just made a mistake or whatever - the general public don't get told that - they only see coverage of fleeing workers as a plane terrorizes the captial...

As Phil B. said - you can only defend stupidity to a point.

Personally, I believe Da Mare should be in jail over Meigs - willful destruction of property, misleading the voters, misuse of federal funds - unfortunately, until the people of Chicago vote him out, he'll continue to do what he's always done.....whatever he darn well pleases. I just can't believe he didn't do something illegal.
