The feds are investigating charges that New York air-traffic controllers endanger passengers by working just three hours per shift and acting like slackers -- chatting, texting and even watching movies when they should be monitoring planes, ...

Seeley raised his concerns on Jan. 17, three days before controllers allowed an American Airlines jet to nearly collide with two military cargo planes over the Atlantic.

C-17 controller: “I said stop the American at 21!”

Automatic alarm inside the AA cockpit: “DESCEND, DESCEND, DESCEND!”

AA pilot: “OK, we’re following a descent.”

AA controller: “Do you have that traffic in sight?!”

AA pilot: “No, we do not!”

C-17 pilot: “This is gonna be close.”

AA pilot: “That was not good.”

I know. Just another union ploy.

I know it's a high stress job, but if you are supposed to be pushing tin, then you might want to put your iphone away...

They're hiring new controllers straight outta high school out there... Whadda ya expect? It's all still just a video game to them... And not one with flashy enough graphics to hold 100% of their attention.

Can't comment on the politics of this story but will say that the NY ATC guys have always been on the ball when I have dealt with them.

Agreed.

But that Teterboro guy sure wasn't.

I agree -- I have experienced great handling from them.

There will always be stories like these out there. Who knows if the claims are true.

My one experience with NYC ATC was not very good, but ended up somewhat satisfying.

Flying back to Massachusetts from Old Bridge, I called them up at least ten times to request a transition. I was ignored. I continued climbing and when I got to 7500 feet, turned on to my heading back to Mass. That's when I heard "Aircraft calling NY, go ahead with your request"

I replied with the same diligence they had given me.
