Sorry Elizabeth, it's hard to believe that spring is right around the corner when this is what I saw day before yesterday.

1. US Air mainline covered in snow. Methinks someone is going to have to deice soon.

2. Our spinner after coming in from Rockland. Boston put a delay program in effect after we had already gotten in the gate, so they ended up vectoring us for close to 40 minutes. (6,000 feet + moderate ice) * 40 minutes = lots of ice.

3. The radome after the above conditions. Produced some interesting interference when we turned the radar on in flight.

4. Snow removal in Boston. They really gang up on the runways.

5.Jet Blue getting deiced.

6. American 777 getting serviced. Notice the rudder deflection...that's compliments the wind at 190@28G42 when we landed.

7. Taxiing in to our gate behind a Mad Dog. Great visibility today.

Here in Chicago, it was +42 this morning at 5:00am waiting on the train platform. Tomorrow morning the wind chill is supposed to be between -20 to -30!!:hairraise:

How's that for a 24 hour variation!

yea monster cold front here, blizzard warnings all over the state. yesterday it was in the 40's with major melting, now everything is iced over

Yesterday it was nearly 60, I got to work at 9 this morning and my car said it was 28. 6 hours later its 8 out with a -15 windchill and snow. At one point today I heard the winds 320@33g39. Gotta love Iowa.

now everything is iced over
Speaking of iced over...

I am stuck here in Ithaca for another day so I decided to go for a drive. I ended up at a place called Taughannock Falls State Park. I saw the sign for the falls overlook and I almost didn't park and get out of the car because it was a little nippy. I'm glad I did.

Holy crap, Mari, that's one of the coolest (literally) pictures I've seen!

What cool pictures!

In about an hour this morning our temperatures went from 60 to 24 and really windy.

You're supposed to have -25 wind chill by the time you get home!

We had just enough 40-50 degree days to melt the snow off the roof and driveway.

Oh, and I have ice pics, too.

Thanks Mari! That's pretty neat.

In many northern towns, they will run a fountain until it makes its own ice sculpture. Jackson or some other town up there did that. Pretty neat results.

I'm grateful you're not a wimp like Matt. :)

I used to go to Boy Scout camp (Camp Barton) every summer just up the lake from Taughannock. Very nice place. Every year we took a trip to the falls. It's just as impressive in the summer. IIRC it's the tallest waterfall in the east ( I could be wrong, and I'm too lazy to confirm right now.)

According to the local travel guide I have here, it is has the highest vertical drop east of the Rocky Mountains, and at 215 feet is taller than Niagara Falls.

I was truly impressed when I peered over the edge of the overlook. The picture doesn't really give you the sense of scale.

That is tall. From the picture, I would have guessed closer to fifty feet.

Dear Ken and Ken,

I sincerely hate you both for having the intelligence and forethought to reside at a more favorable latitude. You both my kiss the giant, frozen, road-salted rear end of my Ford. I can only hope that the extreme heat and humidity of the summer months at your respective latitudes make you yearn for more time up north, where the summers are most temperate indeed.

Love,
Ted

Dear Mari,

That's a really cool picture! But if you're in Ithaca, why don't you hop down to IPT for lunch with Missa and me? It's not far! Especially by Lear or Hawker! :)

Love,
Ted

Actually, this morning it's warm out - 38F and raining, but the predictions are for that to turn to snow by late morning, and for the temperatures to drop to somewhere in the 20s by the end of the day. I'm in agreement with Matt, though. Sorry Elizabeth, Spring is nowhere near around the corner. Global warming hasn't kicked in nearly enough for that yet, and if this winter is like last winter here in PA, the bad stuff is going to be due right around Valentine's Day, making any travel around that time period difficult at best.

If it's any consolation, I'll doing a preflight shortly in this:

This is what I woke up to this morning. -15°F temp with a -39°F wind chill. This after the temp started out around +40 yesterday morning. A strong front went through and we had 40-50 mph winds last night that kept waking me up... glad the power stayed on to keep me warm.

A WIND CHILL WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL NOON CST TODAY.

[snip]

SUB ZERO TEMPERATURES AND WINDS OF 15 TO 30 MPH WILL CREATE WIND CHILLS OF 35 TO 45 BELOW ZERO THROUGH THE MIDDAY HOURS. WIND CHILLS WILL STRUGGLE TO REACH 25 BELOW LATE IN THE DAY.

Yikes! Cleared the schedule for today, and not going anywhere! More time to study for multiengine checkride oral that was supposed to be today.

The irony? It is totally sunny out!!!

It's a frigid +46* rite now going for a high of only 58 or so. Definitely not spring like.

Dear Ted,

Having lived much of my life in Ohio and Wisconsin, I have to say summers in Florida are far, far easier to deal with than winters up north. In fact, Jacksonville is farther north than I'd like to be. Hell isn't fire and brimstone. Hell is wet feet when it's cold enough to get into your bones. Hell is scraping ice off your car when inhaling makes your nostrils stick shut. And summer in Florida isn't all that much hotter or more humid than, say, an afternoon at AirVenture; it just lasts a little longer.

Love,
Ken

I got outta bed at 1AM to let Pancho out. My remote radio thermometer said it was 1 degree outside. It had been 50 in late morning.

We also had snow that blew up against the house and coated my cars that are under roof. The further out spots are bare. :dunno:

I hacked it a bit and got the other temperature senders working. Get this: The one out front under the carport roof that was 1 degree says it's currently 15.8 degrees. Thinking that location was always warmer than what was supposed to the official temperature, I put the other one on the back porch on the railing - now 33.1 degrees. I guess that's the effect of the sun heating up the brown railing.

I need to find a shady really-outside spot in the weather.
