Will be flying through Northern MI on Wednesday. Starting at SUW with my final destination being FKS. Plan is to fly over NewBerry MI then Mackinaw City. (Will not be flying over lake MI). Any advice or things to watch for considering water on N and S side of me? Any known weather in the area? VFR 172

Not sure what you mean by water on N and S side. If you're close to one lake, you'll be pretty far from the other. And no one can tell you about "known weather" this far ahead of time.

But lots to "watch for"... carry a camera if you can, the Big Mac is quite a sight, not to mention Mackinac Island and the Grand Hotel. When you get farther south there will be Torch Lake, the Grand Traverse Bay and Sleeping Bear Dunes. NW Lower Michigan is beautiful, take it slow and enjoy! :)

Thank You. wasn't sure if there always seemed to be fog or anything like that in the AM near one of the bodies of water.

The folks up there are all pretty friendly and most of them speak pretty good English too !

Take a detour and fly over the pictured rocks near munising.

From my quick planning, adding ~135nm to avoid the lake?

I know you must enjoy flying as we all do but I don't personally understand that especially on a trip that is already fairly long in a 172.

Have fun. You'll get some cool pictures up there along the shore.

You can shave off some distance and cross over Beaver, North Fox, and South Fox Island and keep a dry footprint. There's a soon to be opened public strip on N Fox. It's already mowed and easily visible if there's an emergency.

Just saw this on FLYING in reference to the airstrip restoration you mentioned on North Fox Island...

Island Airfield Reopens in Michigan

As soon as the FAA makes the addition to their electronic airport/facility database you'll find the details at http://www.iflightplanner.com/Airports/6Y3. Until then, the URL will default to the A/FD search page.

Best,
Andy

Hope your engine runs good. What I recall from flying up there is not a lot of people live there. Lots of trees do, though. Your airplane doesn't know the difference, but it will make lots of upsetting little noises anyway. Enjoy, it really is a beautiful part of the world.

Yes, it's called "auto-rough". :goofy:

Yeah, I kinda know a little about what's going on there, if you see who they quoted in the article. :D

Yeah, I submitted the info on N.Fox to the State and the FAA, hope the FAA gets it right. They usually take quite awhile to get it published also.

You can access the info now at
