Northern Lights semi-explained.

One of the things on MY GOT TO DO LIST is see the Auroa Borialis. I have heard you can see them in Northern Maine but can't confirm that.

One of the coolest things I've seen from the airplane is the Aurora Borealis. They were visible from just east of Milwaukee to our destination, which was Toronto. At first I thought it was the lights of Milwaukee being reflected on a high cloud layer but as we got further from Milwaukee and out over the lake it became brighter. Finally you could see the green shifting curtain effect.

I think they are more common in the winter and it helps to be in a place that is dark, with no light pollution. I've heard people say they have seen them all across the northern tier of states so I'm sure that northern Maine would qualify.

I saw the northern lights from eastern Washington once, many years ago. Facinating to watch.

See'em every winter:yes: They have been seen as far south as Nebraska. I still like watching them after 30 years...:drink:

every now and then when activity is really high you can barely see them in Iowa.

They are real cool over the north Atlantic. Not so much over the Pacific. Maybe that is because I am usually on break during that timeframe.
