Johnstown...? Umm..ok

How about KVVS? A short trip to Falling Water (Frank Lloyd Wright house), Ohiopyle, and various George Washington sites (for which I offer my humble service as Tour Guide) :D

VVS will have both runways operational by next Spring, BTW. It only has a LOC approach, but is a nice quiet field with helpful line folks.

:) I just copy and paste.....

I know Mary would love to do the hop to Falling Water (Frank Lloyd Wright house) I'm sure her Mom (84 years young) would want in on that too. Now that her son in law is a pilot she likes the travel much better then the AARP bus trips. :yesnod:

June/July would be good time to go there – Mountain Laurel in bloom, warm, usually good weather, though and early AM trip across the mountains and late day takeoff would be best way to avoid the inevitable turbulence.

There's another, lesser-known FLW house which is actually nicer, IMHO. Kentuck Knob sits on top of a high point with specatcular views in all directions. It's about 20 minutes from Fallingwater.

Nemacolin Woodlands resort is also in the neighborhood. There's a private airstrip there which requires a phone call. Not sure if an overnight is required. You don't have to spend money there -- the hallways are filled with private art collection that is worth the walk. The grounds are gorgeous and golfers will have a world class option.

There are two key French and Indian War sites within 20 minutes of VVS -- Jumonville Glen and Fort Necessity. The forst has a new visitor's center and provides a good overview of the first worldwide war for Empire. There is also an 1830-era inn on the property (which looks remarkably like our 1830 house).

Johnstown could be good for a visit to the Flood museum and a trip up the incline. I'm not sure what the ground trans is for GA there (I've never used JST as a destination).

My airplane is a KWAY (close to VVS) but if anyone flying in would like to do a tailwheel endorsement, I'll make the Chief available.

Actually, JST is a great destination. Very friendly and scenic place.Crew cars and taxi's available. I'm not based there but fly there quite often as I have a second home and family in the area. The Laurel Mtns. are beautiful in the fall. Late June is Thunder In The Valley...about 100,000 motorcyles from all over the country come in for the long weekend. The whole region has activities, especially concerts, tied to the event. Around Labor Day is Folk Fest...a three day music and food extravaganza.

You do not need to stay at Nemacolin to land on their strip. They'll pick you up and shuttle you to wherever in the resort you want to go. You just have to call ahead of time to let them know you're coming.
On top of everything else to see and do there (they even have a chunk of the Berlin Wall that you pass on one of the walking trails), there is a vintage car and plane museum in a hangar by the airport. It's not huge, but worth the visit.
For cigar afficionados, stop into the Cigar Bar...you'll be surprised by the number of celebrities that have their own boxes in the humidor room.... not too mention a huge table-top humidor given to the owner by Winston Churchill.

Also in that area, easily reached from JST or HVV is Ligonier and Fort Ligonier Days, a 3 day festival and reenactment of the battle of Fort Ligonier during the French and Indian war. That's usually in mid October, which coincides with Octoberfest up at Seven Springs resort. Lots of crafts and the like. Seven Springs had their own landing strip, but I heard it is now closed to make way for more hugly overpriced condos. However, it's also easily reached from HVV.

All good info -- thanks!

I second Ligonier Days -- it's become a family tradition each year -- the parade on Saturday is among the best!

But the wx can be tough that time of year....

Aren't AR, MI, WV a little westward for Northeast Flyers?

Actually I agree with Peggy. Based on the concept that big-flyins trump North East Flyers, July should be Osh. I'd suggest events for the months when we have major fly-ins or events be scheduled to different weekends and still offer a destination. That way both are available. Some people might not want to go to the far-away fly-ins (or can't). Wings I'd say is an exception since it's right near PHL.

As to events or places in particular - I enjoyed the LNS lunch, and also will second Shane's suggestion of Cherry Ridge and Jason's of BAF. But maybe you shouldn't listen to me, as I'm not all that likely to be around. ;)

I'm up for that - always wanted to see Fallingwater.

I add the fly-ins from year to year but if you check the NEF schedule we always add the alternate north east/mid atlantic fly in locations. It helps some of us to plan.

Look's good Gary. How about York in Feb?

Do you have a weekend picked for the Jan trip? I need to reserve an airplane.

Just updated......added York for lunch run and RDG was the end of january last year and the wx worked out so January 23rd at noon.

I'd add KTGI, Tangier Island. I know some don't like it, but I've always had a good time there.

KCGE - Cambridge, MD

W41 - Crissfield, MD

KBID - Block Island

1N7 - Blairstown, NJ

KWWD - NAS Wildwood

Aeroflex Andover is a fun place to fly to. Its like landing on an aircraft carrier. Hard surface and soft surfaces available. No restuarant, so we'd have to coordinate for our first NorthEast Flyers picnic !?!?!?! :)

K12N - Its a fun place!

Runway 3/21 - 1981'x50'

I guess I should work on my short field technique in the Sundowner. The Archer was a no brainer but I'll get there in the new bird too. Thinking back...shortest field I went into was Stonington, ME 2099 x 60 ft

Then let's add a Fly-in to Reigle (58N). Just be careful not to catch the clothesline taking off from 13.

The previous owner of my Tiger was based at Reigle with it. No worries. I've done many a touch and go there.

Picking up the Tiger from its Annual nearby there at Deck this weekend 9D4.

Aye!! Reigle?? Andover/Aeroflex? Cherry Ridge?

How 'bout places where the big iron can go???? :D:D:D

Ahem - the Aztec's gross is about 900 lbs north of your cute little single. It has no problem with the aforementioned strips. ;)

It sounds to me like you need an "around town" plane, Andrew! :yesnod:

Since the center of the CONUS is somewhere in "New York...I mean Kansas," The following states would be in the Northeast quadrant:

MN, IA, WI, IL, IN, OH, MI, PA, WV, MD, DE, NJ, NY, VT, NH, CT, ME, RI, MA...

Oddly enough, North Carolina is not in the northeast. So no, Michigan is not too far. I've made Wings not once, not twice, not three times, but four times, which is at least 3 more times than people that most people that live in the supposed northeast.

I noticed there wasn't a single grass strip mentioned... :frown3:

On the north east flyers facebook page and soon to be posted on the web page an open invitation from Gordon Cambell for the soup on sunday run at 9VG.

Besides the monthly attempt to meet up through the group a bunch of us always post for places to go. I'm game to try jusy about anywhere for a day trip.

What a great find! That looks like a great place to fly... thanks for posting!

One place I'd like to fly to in the spring is Mexico farms near Cumberland, MD (1W3), mostly for the old-timey feel the place seems to have.

I will be flying the Chief to Northern NY (KPTD) in the Spring -- that will be about 5-6 hours in the air with at least 2 fuel stops (probably more sanity stops than anything). I will post about that trip and the airports found along the way.
