NorCal Meetings Eternal page

I'm going out of town til mid December, hope to come back and join you guys wherever you may be going :)

May be sould count who is coming to Harris Ranch on Saturday and share the tail numbers. May be we could use the following format;

POA ID Name Tail# Aircraft-Color ETA(local)

RHV Pilot Saleem 114FA C-172 - W/Y 1400

We have definite plans for Saturday?

If I can talk my wife into it, it will be one of the following two (the first is the same one I flew to Petaluma):

MAKG Mike N6190R Cessna 172RG W/Y/Br 1200?
N837SP Cessna 172SP W/Bl

No guarantees on that.

Keep an eye on the weather. Looks great for the Coast Ranges and Central Valley. Looks terrible in the southern Sierras and over most of Southern California. Lots of stuff can change in two days.

I can't do that far of a trip Saturday. If anyone is up for something more local, I can probably do it. I have to be back at the home drome around three.

I can't make it, I'm gonna bag a bunch of new airports in the Sierra foothills Saturday.

Holy crap dude I wish my plane wasn't in annual or I'd join you!

I may be flying into California tomorrow (Friday the 22nd) - but only as far down as Fort Bidwell (A28). Depends on what time I make it to Malin (4S7). Morning fog and frost may put me there too late in the day at 4S7 to make it to A28 and still refuel at Lakeview (KLKV).

Fog and Frost might not be an issue, the reason is today there are some significant winds forecast. They might be diminishing that far north though. You should have nice visibility. Beautiful country up there!

JAQ is fun. Its narrow and up-sloping. both give a illusion of a high approach If you have get a taxi to Jackson Rancheria, its an indian casino 10mi away.

I'll be meeting friends at JAQ, having a quick lunch, love that area.

That still might be a little far for me. Have a fun flight.

I have landed there but never stayed. I have heard they will come pick you up, if you give them a call (I haven't tried it, though).

I think there is a little restaurant at the golf course at Oroville (walking distance). It might be worth trying.

Didn't depart till noon due to frost. Turns out the winds in west central Oregon were fine, as was the visibility - but I ran into significant winds near Crater Lake and south of there. Not fun turbulence and significant down and up drafts. Made for a wild ride; sometimes 1000+ fpm down and up. The only thing I could do in the downdrafts in the C-152 I rented was to fly out of it toward lowering terrain.

When I got to Malin there was a strong direct easterly crosswind on runway 32. Odd, since Klamath 17 miles NW (and a mountain range over) was reporting winds from 340. I like to think I can land in strong crosswinds, but after two attempts I decided there was no point risking a bent plane for a landing that in this case was optional, so departed for home. A more westerly route still yielded similar turbulence and up and downs, but things became silky smooth again at same latitude as Crater Lake.

At least I got myself some pictures and videos, though.

Yes, that area is known for the roller coaster ride.

Sounds like you had a decent day considering the winds. Beautiful country up there, not bad down here though...
Pics and vid?

I drove by harris ranch on my way down to Socal yesterday, couldn't believe how stinky it was. Kind of a turn off but I have access to a plane and might just be crazy enough to come. Is it still happening?

I took about a 3 minute video as I passed Crater Lake that I need to convert and upload to Youtube or Vimeo. The attached photo was taken right after I finished the video - I had started to lose altitude. I need to sift through to find the better quality photos - none are great.

Harris Ranch for me tomorrow is looking unlikely. The issue is mainly distance.

Looks like a lot of people are dropping the ball. We might have to cancel it. Can we please raise hands, who is still going to Harris ranch?

Wow, that's all I can say.

RHV, watch the weather. There is an AIRMET TANGO for moderate turbulence below 14000 over all of California. Those overstate turbulence by a lot, but be ready for it. If you've never experienced moderate, it will open your eyes. Know Va for your weight (it's SLOW solo in a 172), and use it if there is any doubt. 3.8G is actually quite a lot and is unlikely in moderate, but if you're not sure, slow.

Looking at the skew-T's, I think the shear zone is at 10000 over the bay and 5000 over the central valley. The skew-T's also indicate that surface fog in the central valley is VERY likely. Make your own analysis here.

It looks like surface winds are pretty light, but I'm not sure I'd recommend a trip over the foothills to a new pilot today. Even a 10 knot wind across a modest ridge can give you some interesting wind shear on approach, though I'm sure you experienced some of this at Reid.

MakG,
Thanks for the heads up. I could not go anyways, family kept me busy.
what is the best way of learning about weather conditions like this one.

The FAA weather book is OK. Robert Buck's is better.

The glider literature seems to have the best stuff about turbulence.

Most of the raw information is at ADDS, plus rucsoundings.noaa.gov.

It doesn't smell on the ground at the restaurant. The stinky feed lots are about 10mi north.

I'm out this weekend.

It went great. Landed at four more airports, Pine Mountain Lake, Calaveras, Westover Amador and Placerville.
Here's Pine Mountain and Calaveras...
Total time, 4.8 hobbs, 3.9 Tach, 18.75 gallons, throttled back to about 95mph, saved fuel and enjoyed the scenery.

True John. It's kind of a greasy spoon overlooking the putting green of a muni course. They have their own aircraft parking lot. Used have good fuel prices over at the pumps.

Anyone want to meet up on Sunday? I'm hoping the turkey coma wears off by then.

I am hoping to get up some time this weekend, but things are kind of up in the air. My son is here from UCSB and I am in Tahoe for Thanksgiving and at least Friday.

I'm out until probably the first week in December.

took a trip to L45 and back on the weekend.

My transponder stopped working on the way back. The oakkland center terminated FF .

Any suggessions what is the best way to fix or replace the transponder. I have a basic cessna transponder.

If it is an older transponder, make sure you get an estimate for the repair. It can often be cheaper to or maybe about the same to put a new one in. BTDT. It probably is not made by Cessna. Perhaps Narco?

Thanks John,

Mine is an old cessna transponder. I think they call it 400 or something. I have been looking online.
Does anybody know how is this one?

That is a non precision GPS, not a transponder. It is IFR capable, though, enroute and non precision approach only.
