Rob, the injured pilot, is a super nice guy. He had flown us during our Metinicus expedition. He even made numerous circles so I could get some aerial shots.
QUALIFICATION: The whole bunch of 12 PIA pilots are great guys. The Islanders --
Metinicus, Vinalhaven, Criehaven -- treat them like their own sons, so respectful are they of the life-line attachment they supply to the mainland: freight, mail, passenger service "on-demand," and in all kinds of weather. Kevin Waters, owner of PIA, is the epitome of customer service.
I and 3 others just spent a week on Vinalhaven, but that's another thread to come; but this, for now. Pilot Rick was loading freight for two of us, the other 2 were going by ferry boat. I was inside and put my credit card on Kevin's counter.
"You're all set," was his comment. ??????????? I had no explanation for the comment, but thought that maybe Valerie had paid for the flight for two. (She hadn't.) Upon my quizzical look, "You're all set," again. Well, the plane was loaded; I'll figure it out, later, and off we flew with Rick on July 09.
When I'm in the area of KRKD I always stop in to chat with Kevin; but no favors are in order. ??????????? July 16 we 4 came back to Rockland by ferry, but my vehicle was parked at KRKD. Off to the airport to straighten-out with PIA where, when I entered, Kevin wasn't evident, Rick being behind the counter. "Oh, good; Kevin's not here; I can straighten-out with you for the recent flight of two to Vinalhaven. "
"Well, you can talk to Kevin; he's behind that counter over in the other corner." So he was; and came another, "You're all set." ?????????????
"No, I'm not; I know about that $5.49 per gallon avgas, and that 206 burns more than my Skyhawk's 8 gal. per hour. Finally, he allowed Rick to "ring me up," as goes the phrase. I remained in the dark re the "You're all set." as originally stated. Photos, later, of the Vinalhaven trip.
