At least not in the waters off the Texas Gulf Coast!

In answer to the question that I have now answered over a dozen times (via email), nope, the oil spill is NOT impacting us at all. In fact, the spill is 500 miles NE of Mustang Island, and drifting AWAY from us. Our beaches our clean, the water is spectacular, and business is booming, as people who were headed to the Eastern side of the Gulf seek alternatives -- so c'mon down and see our new place!

In answer to the OTHER question I'm being asked, nope, we're NOT aviation themed...yet. We've been open just 4 weeks now, and have spent that time upgrading the facility. (New pool, hot tub, paint, HDTVs, etc.) The conversion to the aviation theme (and the ultimate name change to "Amelia's Landing") is still 18 months in the future. Right now we're still called the "Harbor Inn", and we're just the cleanest, nicest little motel in Port Aransas...for now!

I'll venture to say that you've done more repair and improvement on the property in the last four weeks than had been done to it in the five years preceding.

That is a safe bet. We've had to clean these rooms with putty knives and Super Clean. Mary's got 'em so you could eat off the floors now, although they're no where near where we want them yet. Lots of remodeling to come.

Mary and I just finished installing another batch of 32" HDTVs. Anyone got a use for a dozen more 19" tube TVs? I'll sell 'em to you CHEAP. :D

It's amazing how much more counter space you've got when you get rid of the old CRT TVs. And, of course, each room now has a hundred more channels, and 50 music channels -- always a nice thing. Between that, and the iPod inputs on our new clock-radios, we've got your tunes laid down!

It's time to go flop my lard butt in the pool. Dang, but that new pool has been the best thing we've ever done. That, and the hot tub for soaking my old, achy bones after another day of painting decks! :yikes:

Ibuprofen, a margarita, and 20 minutes in the hot tub, and I'm good to go for another round! :rolleyes:

What's the nearest commercial airport? We'll be empty-nesters pretty soon and might start looking for some getaways.

Yeah, it's funny. When we started remodeling the Alexis Park Inn (into the aviation theme) up in Iowa, I was in my early 40s. Now, I'm 51. Dang, if those few years didn't make a big difference in my stamina and ability!

I've discovered all sorts of weird things about my new-to-me older body. My fingertips on my left hand now stay numb most of the time, after painting on my hands and knees for a week. Never did THAT before, and I hope it goes away when I'm done painting. Also, holding a Sawz-All at arm's length for an 8 hour day (pruning our palm trees) whilst balancing in a 60 foot hoist managed to hurt all SORTS of muscles and ligaments that I hadn't used since college. My left elbow doesn't want to move anymore -- period. Don't know why.

After a month of beating myself up for 10 hours every day, I'm getting better -- but everything still pops, cracks, and hurts in the morning after spending 11 hours on my hands & knees painting. Thus, the hot tub and margaritas...

Nearest airport is Mustang Beach (KRAS). We can pick you up from there.

Nearest airport with commercial airline service is Corpus Christi International (KCRP). That's about 30 minutes from here. There are cabs and rental cars from there.

San Antonio, Corpus Christi or Houston are your closest with commercial service.. Corpus being the absolute winner but with the fewest choices of service and Houston being a hub for Continental, Southwest and a smattering of everyone else (3-4 hr drive from Houston)

I did check on Google Earth to see where everything is, I'm not real familiar with that area. I've been to Houston and San Antonio airports, and know I can get there from KC. I'll have to check on getting down to Corpus Christi.
 
I highly recommend KRAS. Last Labor Day we flew down from Denver. I think we were the only out-of-towner on the ramp. Its got a nice smooth runway and the approach from either end is really cool.

Jay, we'll come down and stay with you in a year or two. We loved Port A. Your new place is right near everything and sounds like its going to be a pretty sweet place to kip.

Your experience parallels ours. We flew down here in 2009, looking for a beach for our teenage kids after spending a few days at the music festival in Austin.

We found the beach -- and SO much more. We found our paradise! Within 48 hours after landing, we realized that THIS was where we wanted to live, work, and play.

13 months later -- here we are! Sometimes I still have to pinch myself to realize that I'm *not* dreaming... :yesnod:
 
Fly commercial to Austin, then we'll load up the Cherokee and head down there.
 
I have to admit, as much as I loathe all things Texan the current situation appears far and away superior to the previous one. I never could find a reason to visit Iowa, but I could imagine myself flying down to the beach. Some day.
 
We will definitely keep you in mind this time next year, Jay. Since our family is spread out now - parents in Iowa, me and wife in Georgia, sister and hubby in Texas - we have to pick a spot and all meet there for our 'family vacations' now. This year we're doing Georgia. Next year could be a Texas year!

One of the best vacations we ever took as a family was to Florida, Gulf coast - we did some tourist stuff for a few days, then spent one whole day on a beach. One whole day doing nothing. I sat in my lounge chair, under an umbrella. Every now and then I'd move the chair to keep it in the shade. Every other now and then I'd wander over to the hut/bar and get another rum drink (I started at the top of the drink menu and worked my way down). The kids did whatever, my wife did her thing, and I did nothing. We watched the sun set, then went out to dinner, and headed home the next morning.

I'd like to have another one of those days, just once.

Actually, right freakin' NOW is the best time. The rates are still low, because it's still the "off-season", but the weather is PERFECT. We're talking 80 degrees every day, and a nice breeze off the gulf.

On the other hand, if you want stuff to do, and lots of people, from Memorial Day to Labor Day is pretty exciting (so I'm told). If it's anything like the last three weekends, I'm gonna need to hire a LOT of staff, quick -- cuz it's been CRAZY.

The road out front becomes bumper-to-bumper traffic starting on Friday afternoon. The bars, beach, and restaurant are all PACKED. Then, come Sunday evening, you could lay in the road and not get hit. It's a VERY different market than our property in Iowa City, which is much more steady throughout the week, but without the huge weekend crowds.

We've got our first fly-in guests with us right now. One couple flew their awesome RV-8 down, while the other guy flew an amazing tiger-striped Thorpe T-18. Both gorgeous planes, and really nice folks, too.

Yeah, I'm wondering the same thing.

We've only lived here a month, but I've found darned few things about Texas to dislike. Business is booming, the weather is great, and there are more GA planes flying overhead in a day than I would see in a week in Iowa. What's not to like?

That's a nice flight. (Well, actually, we flew down here from San Marcos, but close enough.)

In fact, that's how we ended up living here. After a few days at the music festival in Austin (in 2009), our kids wanted to hit the beach. So, I jumped on the internet, and asked "Where is the best fly-in beach in Texas?"

Nearly everyone responded "Mustang Island/Port Aransas" -- and the rest (as they say) is history...

What's funny is that what turned you OFF to Texas is what turned me ON to it... :D

After living in Iowa for 13 years, it's kinda nice to live in a state that people openly, loudly, and provocatively support. It seemed like most of the time we Iowans were apologizing for our state; that doesn't happen here in Texas! :cornut:

The problem is that Texans don't apologize for Texas when they should: Odessa Bay City Dumas Leveland etc...
 
Well, I'm going to be at a conference in San Antonio the first week in October. Maybe Leslie can join me and we can spend a few days at your place then!

There is no reason for Iowans to apologize -- the finest people I've known and best places I've been are in Iowa -- but after being subjected to endless jokes and derogatory comments from folks all over the U.S., literally for generations, Iowans tend to have a fairly well-developed inferiority complex.

Texans certainly don't have *that* problem... :D

Without my hot tub I wouldn't be able to climb trees for a living. I'm in it first thing in the morning and last thing at night, sometimes a couple times during the day. 5 min at 108 is remarkably rejuvenating.

108?? Wow. Our hot tub only goes up to 104. If it hits 105, an alarm light actually starts blinking.

Personally, I think 101 is perfect. Hot enough to feel "hot" without sweating too much.
