Newby questions in purchasing my first plane

Bull gears can have a lash adjustment. In old days(way back), the pinion or driven would ride on a pivoting arm, sometimes having a worm gear on sheave to compensate for wear. I can't imagine any easy way for these two gears to have an adjustment, but it would have been nice.

On the 175, I heard somewhere that about 5/8" of play at the end of the prop tip up and down is about the limit, but of course just a rough estimate that can be done standing in front of the plane.

When you have the maximum backlash you will only get .375" (3/8") at the prop tip.
