Dr. Graves, who discovered soaring in 2004, has owned planes for much of his adult life. As a young doctor in Iowa, he would fly himself home to California for Thanksgiving, stopping off for fuel and candy bars. In the years since, he said, he had flown left-front seat — the main pilot’s chair — over every continent but Antarctica, even island hopping across the Pacific to make his way to Australia.
“None of that,” he said, “was a challenge at all compared to an hour in a glider, just staying aloft.”
