Hey there! My name is Tyler and I’m from Destin, Florida. (KDTS) I’ve been interested in getting my pilots license for awhile now. Not really sure where I want to start. Right now I really don’t have the time nor money to go through training. I’m not really sure what I should do until the time comes to start but, at this moment I do not know very much about planes. I’ve never even flown in a smaller plane. I think what I would really like to do in the future is get my pilots license and everything else needed and fly for a private person kind of part time deal if feasible without spending a fortune. Anyways, we own a moving and storage company down here and I want to stick with it but also become a part time pilot also. Anyone have any input on what I should do to start learning more until the time comes to start my training?

Tyler Welcome to POA. There are a few things you can do to get into aviation even before you have the funds to take lessons. First is to particpate on this board, ask questions etc, Second next year attend Sun-n-Fun sort of near you in Lakeland Florida. Finally you can join an EAA (Experimental Aircraft Assn) Chapter, there is one at your home airport Destin Ft. Walton. As a chapter member you should be able to attend seminars, help build aircraft, and best of all tag a long as a passenger on some chapter members flights. Here is a link to your local EAA chapter's website.

Tyler, welcome to POA! In addition to Adam's excellent advice, I'd like to suggest you try soaring... they welcome volunteers, you'll learn about flying (affordably), and being a glider pilot will make you a better power plane pilot when you can afford to pursue that option. A quick search of the Soaring Society of America's website indicates that the closest club to you is VERY close... in Pensacola.

Check out the Coastal Soaring Association.

You don't even need to BUY a book... the FAA provides the Glider Flying Handbook, an excellent publication, for free online!

Troy has an excellent Idea that I had not thought of!!! it will probably get you in the air much more quickly.
