Hello!

I got my medical in hand (3rd Class) and would like to move forward with getting my Sport Pilot, (Maybe this thread should be in here).

I want to get my written out of the way next so I can just focus on the training. I have been up a few times but I don't have much real world flight training yet I purchased the Jeppsen PPL course. Is the written on the Sport Pilot the same as the written on the PPL or are they different? the reason why I ask is because I don't want to purchase Sport Pilot material when I have the PPL stuff.
Any help is appreciated!

Thanks

Hello.

One might ask at this point if you have any intention of ever getting your PPL or are you likely to stick with the Sport forever. It may make a difference as to how to proceed....

Others will offer more specific answers than I could, but if you know the PPL information, you will be more than qualified for Sport and be set up for future upgrade should that become an interest.

Best luck with your training.

The tests will be similar but are not the same. It would have been best not have gotten ahead of yourself by purchasing Private Pilot Training materials rather than Sport Pilot material, but your CFI should be able to work with them.

As RyanB stated, the PPL and Sport Pilot questions are similar, but not the same. Sport Pilot exam has 40 questions vs the 60 on the Private Pilot exam. You should be able to pass the Sport Pilot exam with the materials you have, but you need to know the limitations of the Sport Pilot in contrast to a Private Pilot. e.g. no more than 1 passenger, aircraft with no more than 1,320 lbs gross weight, no more than 120 knots in level flight on a standard day, less than 45 knot stall speed, flight in between civil morning twilight and civil evening twilight hours, no operations in controlled airspace unless endorsed, VFR only, etc.

As others may have mentioned, if you are thinking of going PPL after, make sure you have a CFI rated for private pilot training. If you start with a CFI-SP, those hours you spent training with him/her won't count toward your PPL.

Just get the $12 ASA test prep, it has the material marked with which cert each question is for, some marked sport, ppsel, both, etc. I wouldn't think you'd need anything more sport specific. I used it for the PP and just remember skipping the stuff marked sport only.

I'm sure there will be others along to encourage you to do PPL, so I'll go ahead and throw that out there. If you're just doing sport to save $$ And you have any desire to upgrade in the future, you'll probably spend less to go ahead with the PPL. Unless you just enjoy taking tests and checkrides and want an extra one of each. (especially since you mention you have the 3rd class and health is not an issue) :)
