Great experience. People wonder why us old farts think new pilots should do a few real long XCs VFR. Tunes you into weather like nothing else does.
Even IFR. As part of my instrument training, I flew from San Diego to Chicago and back, with my CFII, in a NA Arrow II. Lots of weather to get around and decisions to make along the way. It was absolutely fascinating. Traveling across this continent, with all the climate changes, is something pretty incredible.
