Eric Nichols, 17, guided a single-engine aircraft at less than full power narrowly between utility poles and power lines and down onto a road near Tulsa International Airport, allowing himself and a friend to escape unscathed.
Nichols said he was practicing stop-and-go landings at Tulsa International after originally departing from Jones Riverside Airport. The aircraft had come to a complete stop on the runway and had full power as he then began a short-field takeoff, he said.
The plane ascended, but when it reached about 100 feet altitude no more than 30 or 40 seconds after takeoff, Nichols realized that the craft had ceased to climb. He said instruments showed that the plane’s engine was turning much more slowly than needed.
