Apple has announced an event for next Thursday, 10/16.

Rumors have it that new iPads may be announced, with some combination of the following:

Gold color (meh)
Touch ID (nice)
Possibly a larger iPad "Pro" with about a 13" screen.

Look for current models to be discounted.

Also rumored: updated Mac Mini and MacBook Airs.

Read the MaxiPad will likely be delayed due to demand for the iPhone 6. They're allocating more production to meet that demand before shifting to the big one. I guess we'll find out next week. I suspect all will get a refresh to the A8 processor. And we'll see the 16GB option go away (thankfully).

If I had a wish-list (in addition to what's listed above) it would add:
-GPS in ALL units, not just cellular
-256GB option (don't need it now...but will eventually!)

How about an option to upgrade memory later?

I think that's probably more of a hassle for them to bake in than the benefit it would afford. You could argue if they did that they could also make the cellular an optional add-in. But I don't expect to see either.

That's not how Apple rolls nor will they any time soon. Profit margins are great on memory and by forcing consumers to buy enough memory for today and for three years from now from day one makes them a lot of money.

Whenever I buy a Macbook I max out the memory and CPU and SSD from day one. It adds a LOT of cost, like pushes them into the $3,500 or more range, but if you don't do it two years down the line the laptop won't have enough memory for modern software development.

By maxing out all the specs on a Macbook they last me a "long time", usually about three years before I need to upgrade to keep up with all the newer technology I need to do my job. Although it seems like hardware development has slowed down a bit lately, and it appears I may get 4 good years out of this Macbook before I start to feel a little "pain".

BTW, I'm typing this on an iPad Mini Retina, bought for its form factor in the Sky Arrow.

But it is a little on the small side, overall - easy to miss "targets" on the small screen.

A 13" WiFi only for just for mainly web surfing and games around the house would be pretty nice, at least for my use case!

I bet we'll see the 13" units in a lot of cockpits, too.

Not only that, adding things like sockets and slots takes up room that can be better used for things like a bigger battery, or just making the device smaller/lighter/thinner. For example, when Apple switched to non-removable batteries on their laptops, the extra room allowed them to switch from the old 5-hour removable battery to an 8-hour non-removable one.

Amen. That's exactly what I do too, and that philosophy has served me very well over the years.

I just got the IPadair full screen,im running out of room in the cockpit.howeer a 13 inch screen would be of interest to me as I use the I pad on my boat also.

My home computer is a late-2008 15" MacBook Pro.

I've maxed out the RAM over the years, and put in a larger 750g hard drive.

Dead reliable, save it's internal SuperDrive, which is toast. Very rarely need a CD/DVD drive - for those few times I do I bought a $40 external CD/DVD.

Anyway, some day I'll be looking for a replacement. Since my MacBook Pro rarely leaves my desk any more, a Mac Mini may do the trick when the time comes.
