Howdy folks, I wanted to find a place to discuss aviation with like - minded flight enthusiasts, and this looks like the place.

A bit about me: I live in Alaska and I've been working at a flight school in Palmer since June of last year. I served 7.5 years active duty in the army and decided it's time to stop jumping out of airplanes and learn how to fly them. :D

For the flight school, I handle all the flight scheduling, some of the aircraft maintenance (I'm limited in what I can do there, since I'm not an A&P.) and general customer service stuff.

It's a great small company, family atmosphere and they have been good to me. I have about 30 hours in my logbook so far and they haven't charged me a dime. I just flew my first solo about 4 months ago in a Piper PA11 Cub. I confess I'm a bit biased, but I think Alaska is the best place in the world to live and fly.

Welcome to the forum, not sure you will get a lot of like minded enthusiasts. Did a trip to AK this summer . Loved the flying. Keep going and get that ticket.

Welcome!

What's been the biggest surprise for you in the first 30 hours? (Besides not being charged, which is a pretty sweet deal!)

I wouldn't mind Alaska at all, but half the year I don't want to be frozen. Plus them summer Mosquitos are bigger than crows down here in the south.

I used to spend summers in kenai and anchorage but always left before the
place turned into an ice block.

What's your goal? CFI? Flying the Otters? Que paso?

First post.....

Welcome to POA....

Welcome and Thank You For Your Service.

Welcome! That's awesome that you're getting your training at no cost! I'm about to have my second lesson next week. I've been to Anchorage before, and it was gorgeous. I am sure the rest of Alaska has a lot of great landscape to see as well. I am sure if we ever make it back up there, my husband and I will be taking a flight to see the sights.

My best flying was in Alaska. I'm looking forward to going back and maybe working for Ravn. I was warned when I went there that I'd either love it or want to run screaming but after 11 months, I had a tear in my eye when I left and that was after being there over the worst winter in decades.

Have fun, be safe, and explore!

Thanks for the response folks, I'm kind of surprised by the volume! Uh, biggest surprise? I'd say either the fact that an 800 lb. Cub can be safely flown in a 33 kt. crosswind, or the fact that my instructor actually got out of the airplane and trusted me to fly it safely. :dunno:

Welcome to the board and sometimes the bored. When i was getting back into flying last year, i found PoH to be an indispensable place to stop daily to learn from my fellow pilots. Bookmark this place and make it part of your personalized learning plan. The group is great, quite helpful, and often quite funny.

Believe me that you'll feel the same way after each BFR.

Welcome and good luck with your flying.

Welcome!!! I am truly envious. I grew up in Anchorage and have been dying to get back to Alaska since I got out of the military myself. I'll make it back up there someday, I hope. You're getting close! Knock out those last few hours and enjoy, and post frequently on POA...especially with your questions!!! There are always plenty of helpful folks on here willing to offer guidance on any topic!
