new blank checks

I really don't write many paper checks any more, but there are occasions when I need to. I am now out of checks and wonder where is the best place to buy a minimal number of basic checks for good price. I have tried a few web sites and you have to go through the whole design price to see the final total price in the check out window. The last one (Bradford) seemed good. They claimed I was getting a free book of checks and I turned down all the options. I was going to pay $6.99 for about 240 checks, but then on the check out page they added a $6.00 handling fee. I just have this problem when a handling fee is as much as the product. I know that's barely a gallon of 100ll, but still, if they had been up front I probably would have completed the purchase.

Any suggestions?
 
How much are they from the bank?
 
Checks.com says free shipping also and $4.99 min. Do they add a "processing fee" or something.

PS, my son jokes about how much time I waste invest trying to save a few dollars when I go to purchase something online.

I can understand your son's perspective. I laugh at myself sometimes too, but I just have a problem with getting ripped off, whether it is for a little or a lot.

I hope to never be accused of spending too much for anything. My other half is worse than i am though.... You seen those extreme couponers? She ain't that good, but I've seen 30% or better come off the grocery bills. If she does not have a coupon or an Ibotta, she doesn't buy it.

Once again, you have to go through the whole ordering and customization process to get to the final price. 200 checks are $9.90. That is fine. But then, when you get to the final checkout page, that truns into $19.86

Standard lettering Free
Subtotal $9.90
Handling Fees $6.50
Shipping - UPS Trackable $2.25
Sales Tax $1.21
Total Due $19.86

I get free through my bank. And by free I mean they dont pay me anything in interest.
 
Draw up your own checks. As long as all the correct information is on the check the bank shouldn't care where it comes from.
 
That's actually really cheap. I've used checkworks for a while; just ordered some last night $25 for 250. That was cheaper than a couple other places I checked. I write a fair number of paper checks still for the farm.

Deluxe, through the bank, wanted $100 for 200. WTF?
 
I'm a tightwad and proud of it, but for my one financial institution that still charges for checks (my local credit union), I just buy them through the CU. I mean, really, one order lasts me about seven years. How much time is it worth looking for a better deal?

My other institutions all provide free checks.

Many years ago, I used to print my own checks using a plotter.
The IBM Federal Credit Union finally asked me to stop.

FYI , IBM (Endicott) built the check reading machines, which didn’t work with your homemade checks, so they required a human to read it and enter the information in the computer.

When I was running my own business a few years ago, I printed my own checks as well. Used a special magnetic ink laser toner and most of them read ok - a few still required human reading as those checks came back with a mag strip stuck to the bottom of the checks. Apparently something was not up to snuff on my toner.

In a rush, or expedited shipping for a few dollars.

I went with free shipping and they came within a week, but YMMV
 
I worked at night as a teller for a while, while going to college after Air Force; we cashed a check a guy wrote using his kid's notebook - I forgot the required components to make a check legal . . .I think it had to order payment in a "sum certain in cash", be dated, signed by the account owner, indicate the payee (or cash), and be endorsed. Might be missing something - it's been 40+ years. Worst job I ever had . . .

Two brothers scammed us out of a few grand - one "lost" his checkbook and ID, and the other brother used them to clean out the account. Original brother then signed affidavits of forgery, and we had to put the money back in the account. We couldn't prove the identify of the "forger"..

I know.
I spent my first 9 years at IBM in Field Engineering.
I was a bank system specialist.

I go to my credit union about once a year and ask them to print me up about 12 checks for free. Which is usually enough to last me a year or two. They do I it while I wait, only takes a couple minutes.
