Never dieted before. How much weight can I safely loose in 3 weeks?

it's over....you've lost all will power.

you've obviously not learned to tell the pretty gal no.....:D

Day #1 of my new plan of eating better.

Office cutie brought me coffee and donut to my desk. I didn't have the heart to tell her no, so...

This is going to be harder than I thought. But it's 10:15 a.m. and so far that's all I've had so the day's not lost yet. Maybe a Lean Cuisine frozen meal for lunch.

Tell the cutie you need her help working off the calories.

I knew an exec at one of the places I worked that would say crap like that constantly. I'm not much of a "get offended" type but I wanted to record it and then ask him if I could send a copy to his two young daughters and wife to shut him up. Total jerkwad.

Dude, seriously look at Whole 30. Typical menu for a day:

Breakfast: Two eggs scrambled, with half a diced avocado and diced tomatoes added, plus a couple of sausage patties.

Lunch: Grilled, seasoned chicken thighs, half a baked potato with clarified butter, steamed vegetables with vinagrette dressing.

Dinner: Roast beef with a baked sweet potato, green beans with hollandaise sauce.

You will do a lot of cooking. You will not go hungry, this is not a calorie restricted diet. You will lose your taste for many of the poor quality foods so many of us crave. You will lose weight and be more clearheaded.

Rules are here: http://whole30.com/whole30-program-rules/

And with no teeth, it's that much easier to keep the weight off.

Hehehe...very true!

But seriously, the South Beach Diet is the best. I have lost 60 lbs on the Atkin's Diet, but it gets old real fast. There are LOTS of great SBD recipes out there to keep it interesting!

A calorie is a unit of measure, they are all exactly one calorie. However, I get what you are saying and its basically correct. The rub is, the net effect difference is so small in practice as to be inconsequential. Your average, slightly overweight, 50 something guy would see a difference measured in ounces over months in terms of weight loss. That just isn't enough to matter in terms of losing a few pounds. Something else to consider is sustainability of diet, no diet works that you cant stay on it. Different people have different likes/dislikes in terms of eating and you have to find the plan that works best for you. The science is the same no matter which eating plan you choose.

Totally false! I've lost 60 lbs on the Atkin's Diet. Your body DOESN'T store protein. I'm living proof of that. Also, your cholesterol DROPS even though you are eating copious quantities of bacon, eggs, red meat, cheese, etc.. My PCP did it & then recommended it to me. It works!!! It does get boring after a while, so I have modified it to the South Beach Diet.

An ounce of crystal meth and testosterone injections should have you there in couple of weeks.

Ok, um, what exactly is totally false? So you lost 60 lbs on a HFLC diet therefore any other type of weight loss/eating plan won't work? A calorie is not a unit of measurement? Your n/1 study trumps science? I can assure you that you don't want to debate this further. Before you call something false, you better be able to back it up with something better than, "well, it worked for me". This is exactly the type of bro-science I warned the OP about. And just so you know, and I'll make this real simple, no, your body doesn't store protein. What your body does do is store fat, and excess protein becomes fat and is stored if you are eating more calories than you burn, science, it's fascinating. Your body turns everything you eat into a form of sugar to use for energy (over simplistic, I know) even protein.

I'm in my 50s, and about 35-40Lb overweight. I want to get down to a more comfy weight and I want to do it before ski season gets going.

I'm not going to go on some obscure Kale only diet. I'm going to lightly modify my intake and try to do it mostly with a regimen of exercise at the gym 3 times per week, and reducing my carbs.

Back when I had knee surgery I was on a training program for rehab, and I stuck with it carefully. I lost 20Lbs in a matter of a month, so that's what I'm aiming at, but honestly - that sounds too aggressive for someone my age and reduced stamina.

Good general health, but I need to get some weight off my knees and ankles for skiing this winter. Again, I don't want to go on some weirdo food regimen.

I lost 35 pounds in 1 1/2 months and it was simple.

First, I ate 1/2 of my normal portion. Only put this amount on your plate and PUT THE REST AWAY IMMEDIATELY IN THE FRIDGE! This looked like and was a ridiculously little amount of food and left me starving when I finished...BUT...I had one rule:

1) No matter how hungry I was when finished, I would set my iPhone's timer for 12 minutes. The rule was, if I was still hungry after it went off, I could eat some more. That's it!! Guess what?! 99% of the time, when the timer went off, I was not only satisfied...but I was FULL! What the heck!? I couldn't believe it!

I will admit this though...IT WAS A LONG 12 MINUTES! During that 12 minutes the voice in my head was quite strong, convincing and demanding saying things like, "OH MY GOD!!! ARE YOU CRAZY...EAT THAT!! EAT MORE!!! YOU CAN'T GET THROUGH THE DAY WITHOUT MORE FOOD!! EAT THAT, EAT THAT EAT THAT!!

Within two weeks the voice was quieter and my stomach shrank and I didn't need that much food anymore, but I will admit: IT WAS A LONG TWO WEEKS!!

So, you have to ask yourself: What is the value of losing that weight and is that value worth 12 minutes of pain and two weeks of fortitude? I thought so.

Also, that is now 35 pounds more weight I can put in my airplane in the form of luggage, people and fuel!

Don't buy into the 'a calorie is a calorie' stuff. It isn't. I mean, at the base level, of course it is. While it's true that to lose weight you have to burn more than you take in, what you eat makes a difference. It makes a difference in how you feel, how well you can stick with your diet, and so many other things. And of course, if you lose the weight and go right back to eating the same foods and amounts as before you will gain the weight back.

Read all the popular diets. Read their logic, their meal plans, etc. Find the common denominators. Plan out something and experiment. Find what works for you, and adjust as needed.

Same as exercise. ANY exercise is better than no exercise. But you can train for hours and get nowhere, or you can train SMARTLY for minutes and get results.

No matter what route you take, monitor your body fat percentage. If you lose too much muscle, you'll regret it.

I retired 7 months ago and just decided to eat less and exercise more. No complicated diat. No focus on carbs or proteins, just less. Has to be something simple that I can maintain. 2 to 3 miles every day walking or time on a stationary bike. I'm down about 15 lbs. so about 2 lbs per month. Also, blood pressure wasn't bad to start with but is improved (120s over 60s with no meds). I'm 75

I don't want to sound simple, but this is where I think I'm headed. Nothing complicated, nothing weird, no supplements, no 'regimen' to follow. Just lower my intake of everything a bit, and get the exercise ramped up a bit. I think I'm going to target about 5-8Lb per month, and just go gradual so I can enjoy a life without suffering. I just want to be in better shape, I don't want to do an Ironman or anything like that.

When you do that, make the commitment to that life style, and do not go back to prior life style that got you to this point.

This is why you are most likely going to be successful. Plan and expectations are completely realistic!

Youre starting to regret ever asking the question aren't you...?

Why not go see a physician that works with weight loss? I lost 30# in 5 weeks last spring and am 1-2# under that today. No starvation, no procedures, no crazy exercise. There were calorie restrictions, for sure, but I never went hungry. If you want your plane modified you see a specialist. Why is your body any different?

We used to have to real, certificated, live physicians who would share their knowledge for free - Gary and Bruce - but we drove them away because we "knew more than they did". So, we get what we get....

Good thing we are all so darn smart, huh?:dunno:

If physicians are so knowledgeable about fitness why is the world so fat? I see a lot of overweight docs in all specialties I ain't taking diet advice from someone fatter then me. In a funny/sad related note I have a morbidly overweight relative who is an elementary school gym teacher. :mad2: don't reckon she has much to teach.

Doctors are like global warming scientist in that they got sucked in by falsehoods.

The whole limpid theory the medicine subscribes too is based on 2 bad studies. Keys study in 1953 I think demonstrated a correlation between high fat diet and heart disease. Like the global warmists he had to adjust the data to get the result he believed in. He published his study based on 7 countries while he had data for 22 countries. The 7 gave him the correlation that we as a free world still live by but if he used all the data there was no such correlation.

Prior to Keys was the Russian study in 1910 that showed a correlation between high fat diet and heart disease. The problem with this study is it was conducted on rabbits and rabbits are vegetarians that get zero cholesterol from diet. This study was flawed too.

We gave up animal products in favor of grains that we cannot digest. We went to seed oils and grains that make us sick and are afraid of the healthy saturated fats we need.

I changed to a paleo diet in my early 60s and my various health problems went away, I love eating now and I don't need to even get on a scale or count calories.

I would tell you that it is the US food supply system. The way we package things, the preservatives, the salt, the way we process meat. The way we process flour, sugar, etc...

Go ahead, knock the medical profession. It is the country. We are too smart for our own good in some ways. This is one. Fresh is better.

I can tell you do not personally know any physicians. Unless they specialize in nutrition or something weight related do not count on them to be anymore knowable than Joe America. A certified personal trainer is the best source for this. I know both DO and MD docs as well as a personal trainer and I can say without question his nutritional knowledge is greater.

I have more doctors than you can imagine. You know not of which you are talking.

The most hilarious thing about this, is I just flew a Doctor friend of mine to Tulsa to pick up a new plane yesterday. You have no idea at all of what you are talking about...

You are kinda making yourself look bad it's pretty obvious you are completely uniformed.

No way I was at the ER last night stupid ER doc didn't even know what kind of rash I had. I even showed them pictures of what I found on Google and they still tried sending me to a dermatologist LOL. No biggie I saw online you can cure it with bleach and baking soda.:D:D

So let me see if I've got this correct. Your whole point is based on the fact that you know "fat" doctors, but no "fat" nutrionists, therefore they must know more about nutrition, and you have access to google.

Ok, I've got it.

As I said, darn good thing you're so smart.

When you contract something serious, like cancer, I sure hope google can help you. Maybe the nutritionist can help you eat better...

Wow, dude I'm starting to feel bad for you I'm all about fun online banter but I'm starting to feel like a cyber bully picking on the slow kid.

When did I say any of the things you just stated? I think this is all going to fast for you. Take a deep breath and 're read this thread you will hopefully find where you got confused.

you criticize people who spend $300k to $500k and 10 years of their life getting a degree and call it "fun online banter" and then tell me I'm confused? Really? Time to have a reality check young friend. Maybe google can help you.

I'm not going to pick on you anymore. I know a lot of Docs and I don't think any got their degree in 10yrs usually 4yr undergrad 4yr grad and anywhere from 3yrs up for residency add min 1 more year for those with fellowships. Then there is yearly CME, board certification requirements really the schooling never stops.

Gee, thanks for taking it easy on me. You state all of that stuff about how hard it is, but you told me that I know nothing because I rely on one of them, and I should consult a "nutritionist" because they know more. Think. about. it.

Yeah, maybe I should stay home and use google. For heavens sake.

Maybe you should stop posting and just go fly? smh...

I don't know about 'safe'.

I don't have time to exercise so I went with diet only. I started by cutting back on toppings like gravy, salsa, jelly, cheese, etc. Then I stopped drinking soda, eating candy, and most fast food. Went from 215 to 190 in about 5 months. It was slow at first then most of it dropped in the past 6 weeks or so.

I've been in the same boat. Lost the excess and have kept it off. What worked was paleo diet per Mark Sisson. (Blog: Mark's Daily Apple). Changed intake: did not exercise more. Lost the weight about 2 pounds a week. Fitness app worked well for my wife. Sleep app also helps. You can totally do it, and bacon is your friend. Oh, and green smoothies help, if you have a vitamix or similar. Sisson has an approach that works and is not odious or onerous. Happy skiing!

Other stuff that worked for my wife (that I did not try) included trx and yoga. She swears by both.
