So our 15 year old Hoover vacum ain't doing so hot and Its time to put it out to pasture and get something new. Any merit to all the buzz about Dysons or the knockoff cyclone action vacs? There are so dang many models it is confounding.

I got a hoover linx stick vac and have been pleased with it.

Dyson, The Animal!

Best vacuum EVER!

Sunday the Dyson was able to clean this mess up!

[Dee was wondering where her brother, Milo went to, she was afraid he had exploded!]

Bought a $300 Kenmore canister- and it's TERRIFIC. The 4" wide power beater head is TERRIFIC on the vehicles. VERY powerful. And the parts are Robust.

I've had a couple Kenmore canisters but the hose rotted out on the last on after about 6 years and Sears doesn't carry a replacement. IOW I have to junk a $300 vacuum for lack of an easily replaceable $60 part. Kinda put me off of Kenmore vacuums. So I got a Dyson which does work pretty well but it's real noisy. It also lacks a cord winder and the handle/wand combo is kind of a PITA when you need the wand.

Wife was told by a friend who owns a vacuum business to get a Sharp or a Panasonic. She bought a Sharp 12 Amp upright, and it's built pretty well, was ultra-cheap compared to the Dyson or any other well-known vacuum brand name, and seems to suck... which in this case, is a good thing. ;)

Here is my experience with an Oreck and Dyson in a house with dogs:

The Oreck can suck start a Harley (just watch out for the oil drips once it's started, the Harley that is ) and picks up everything in site. As advertised, it is light on its feet. A couple draw backs is lack of attachments on board and needing to purchase bags.

The Dyson, while bagless, had a propensity to clog with fur where the clear suction tube meets the head due to a bend which, IMHO, is too sharp. When it wasn't clogged it worked well. While it does have on-board attachments, they can be a bit awkward to remove from the unit.

we have been extremely happy with our Oreck over any of the canister or upright vacuums we had before that. Light, Easy to roll/push over various carpets or hardwood, and really sucks :hairraise:. We won't go back to using anything else.

We have a Dyson along with a couple of others. The Dyson is a really good machine but the downside is that the beater bristles are too stiff and can damage carpet. Our Dyson has damaged carpet in two of our last four houses and it definitely wasn't because it was cheap carpet either. Berber or loop pile carpet is fine but be careful with cut pile carpet. It's easy to see, when emptying the Dyson canister you'll have far more yarn fiber than dirt.

You can find quite a bit of info and debate on this topic online. I side with those who say it's a problem and I have seen noticeable deterioration on high quality cut pile carpet.

Get a Roomba!

I had one about four years ago and sent it back after the 30 day (or was it 60?) trail period because I found that it spent far too much time around the edges of the room and not enough out in the body of the room. Their programming wasn't adequately tweaked yet.

Well, I decided last spring to try it again and see if they've tweaked their programming. YES THEY HAVE. This machine is great. We got the pet version and it does a great job. We have two LARGE dogs that spend a lot of time in the house. iRobot now has the programming down to where it covers the entire room more equally without spending too much time in one area while missing others. We still use a "normal" vac about every two weeks and run the Roomba two or three times in between.

There are several good brands, the Dyson units work well in my experience. Whatever you get, make sure it has a HEPA filter. Good God the difference those make on dusting....

Very true.

I gotta admit that we use our $50 Hoover with a HEPA filter more than we use our $350 Dyson. The Hoover does a great job also...especially for the price. The attachment suck and/or non-existent though.

If your vacuum fails in IMC, can you still proceed with the mission and clean the rest of the house, or must you divert to VMC?

My wife got sold a Panasonic, touted as "last you a lifetime" ... not so much. Not any worse than the others we've had, but no better, either.

The Kirby sales guy regretted the day he sold my mom the lifetime warrantied vacuum. She puts more miles on the vacuum cleaner than we do on our cars. She claims it's the best vacuum cleaner she's ever (forced her kids to) use.

Speaking of Kirby, I remember not more than 5 years ago, there were actually door-to-door salesmen in my neighborhood and my mother had for some reason let one in. He was there for at least an hour, and it was quite uncomfortable. My mother had no intention of buying anything, but didn't have the heart to stop the guy and ask him to leave.

I'm an Electrolux fan myself and have owned two.

Same here, we've had ours for a decade and it is still going strong (save for a few simple home repairs due to hair binding a spindle or silly things). My guess is we'll replace it sometime in the next 4 years. I like that amortization schedule.
