Need some input, So I accepted another job offer today, my current boss is a real ass. Always threating me with my job ect... The new job needs me right away. Do people still give 2 weeks notice? It's a better move up. I was thinking giving at least a week and part of me thinks he dosent even deserve that because of all the verbal abuse. I have no intentions of stay in the Hotel biz and going back into the hospital biz so out paths will never cross again. I am in a management position btw.
 
IMO you answered the question in the first two sentences

I do know I will never use him as a reference and I think my sanity is worth more.
 
Suck it up and be a man. Give your 2 weeks and stick to it.
 
My loyalty to a company has always been adjusted to equal their loyalty to me.

Normally I always give a month notice, but if the owner was constantly threating me like that, yeah, respect begets respect.
 
I've always given notice even to the most obnoxious of bosses, but I don't think you're under any obligation to if it could mean not getting the new job. I mean, would he give you two weeks' notice if he canned you?

If you can give him some notice without losing the new job, fine. You'll feel better for it. If not, then leave. That's my $0.02.

As an aside, I once gave an especially obnoxious boss two weeks' notice, whereupon he had payroll cut me a check for the last two weeks and told me not to come in to work anymore. I never did figure that one out. I also took a chance putting him down as a reference on a job application years later, and he gave me a spectacular reference. Go figger.

Give two weeks notice, but during those 2 weeks feel free to give better than the boss gave you! It will probably prove cathartic.
 
If he threatens on a daily basis, just wait until he threatens you again. Then have him make good on his threat. Or just walk out saying you don't care.

That would probably make you feel better, but in the end it's normally better to take the high road. Give him the two weeks notice. If he's a true a$$, then he may give you the boot on the spot. I've seen it happen.
 
I left my first job out of college with no notice, never regretted it. never used them as a reference.
 
Honorable people give 2 weeks notice of their departure. Just because your current boss is an ass doesn't make you dishonorable...does it?

Besides, if he thinks you're a POS (and it certainly sounds like he does) he probably won't let you stay the whole 2 weeks -- but you will have done the honorable thing.

One thing I learned from going back to work at the same newspaper three separate times -- you never know when someone or something from your past might help (or hurt) you.
 
give two weeks notice and go on vacation for those two weeks
 
NOT giving 2 weeks notice to the old employer looks bad to your new company..

But... Your situation sounds toxic and better to give the ass notice if you can... My guess is he will fire you on the spot.....

A lot of jobs will escort you out the door after you give notice, if so then enjoy your 2 weeks vacation until you start your new job. Eff the old one and feed them fish heads.
 
One of the worst companies I ever worked for gave me the best reference. And I was fired before I had a chance to quit.

One of the better companies I worked for layed me off due to lack of business, then lied and told my future employers that I had injured my back and could not work.

Two weeks notice is just a courtesy and is not required, unless it is in a contract. If you are not happy where you are at, leave and do not look back.

I bet they will fire you upon receiving a two weeks notice.

I was 18 and working at an International Harvester dealership as a mechanic. The boss called me in one day and told me that I will be paid through 5pm today and then I would not be needed anymore. I thought since I am being paid I will give them a good day work. How stupid I was then.
 
Providing two weeks notice is a professional courtesy, and I would still offer it even if I knew that I would be escorted out the front door that very day.

However, if your new employer is pressuring you to give less than two weeks notice to your existing employer, that's concerning. I've had that happen twice, and both times I voluntarily left the new job after less than a year. It's not a good sign. If the new employer respects you, they'll afford you the time to extend common courtesy to your existing employer.

In my experience, most managers have no idea how to motivate employees outside of an implied threat of termination. Keep in mind that some people hold grudges and have long memories, and you probably don't know whom your old boss may influence in your new industry. You're already making a statement to your current employer by resigning.

There is no answer that fits all circumstances.

If this company decided to lay you off, would they give you two weeks notice or, instead, have your computer turned off immediately and have you put your personal effects in a box and be escorted off the premises? Actually, if that's the case, your two-weeks notice might result in "get out now!"

Is this a small company in a town where the head managers of companies like this get together and talk and walking out without notice would be spread around?

Come to think of it. is this a business community that googles its employees and would be concerned with bad-mouthing an employer on social media?

What is your personal ethics of the situation? That's a biggie. What my employer does reflects on my employer. What I do reflects on me.

Just the first of many questions I would be asking myself in your situation.

I got no notice from the sales place I worked at, just a routine early morning meeting (after a routine 1hr 20min drive) but just my boss was there, and I was to leave immediately.

I gave my two weeks notice for a fast food place and held out even when it got to the point of insanity and working severely undermanned, 3 people running a store after a tornado which turned out to be the busiest day of my work there.

Two weeks or any length notice is done out of respect for the losing employer. If he was threatening your job and acting that way towards you, my opinion, quit and walk out. He didn't earn any consideration from you. He obviously didn't value you as an employee. Around here, when you give two weeks, they get mad and tell you they don't want your two weeks and send you on your way.

It just depends on the situation. Let's turn this around. Would your boss give you two weeks notice if you were being fired? Probably not. If it's an amicable, professional relationship you don't leave leave him hanging. Otherwise, see ya. Your situation sounds like there latter.
 
As an employer, I appreciate two weeks notice, whether they stay or go on the spot depends on the position and our relationship. I have had a month's notice before and asked the guy several times to stay, and I've been given two weeks notice and asked them to leave immediately. I have never pressured a new hire to leave their current position without notice, our business is one where everybody knows everybody and I wouldn't want my guys leaving without notice so I don't ask anyone else to do it.
That being said, your a-hole boss will do one of two things, tell you to pack your crap and get out now or beg you to stay. :D
On the firing side, I don't give prior notice, but depending on the circumstances, I pay them 2 weeks to 2 months pay. The exception is of course stealing and a couple other offenses, then they get a box to load their crap in on the way out. :nono:
 
I work in the hotel industry. I am the chief engineer at this hotel. I have been there a year. My boss is a cry baby if things don't go his way. He's all happy go lucky but when something goes wrong its always my fault and he lets me know that. Just this past Thursday he jumped my butt saying we cant continue doing this, he was talking about issues with my employees that I was addressing with a couple of the new guys. And if corporate came though and chewed his butt over things that I would be leaving before him. These type of comments are weekly.

Last month he wrote me up for leaving property because I took a guest to the airport in the shuttle at 6:30am and I even asked him if it was ok. As soon as I left the boiler went down and the hotel didn't have hot water. He tried to call me but I left my PERSONAL cell phone on my desk charging. He wrote me up for not carrying my phone. Even though the company doesn't pay for it. I didn't sign the write up.

That's just a few issues, but the hidden threats of my job is weekly. Part of me wants to give 2 weeks but he has walked a few the same day. I don't want to stay two weeks either. I will probably give 2 weeks and leave by the end of the day if I am not walked.
