Wow, they have to have some trust and balance........ I couldn't do it

I see that the opinion of the older generation about the younger one is universal.

48-year-old Yu Ji (above) is one of the workers and he has been working on high cliffs building such plank roads for more than 10 years. He comments: "Young people don't want this job, as it requires them to stay deep in the mountains for months or even years"

Probably true but I'da thought dangling precariously above thousands of feet of screaming terror and certain death might have a little to do with it!

It is not about what they have, it is more about what they don't have: OSHA and Personal Injury Attorneys! :D

BTW the coolest thing in south China is seeing the 25 story bamboo scaffolding that used for new and old construction!

Do that work? Heck, you wouldn't have gotten me out there to take the pictures. Yikes!

I don't see what the big deal is- most of the workers shown have harnesses on where it would be wise, and there are tons of points on the wall to clip onto (article says "no safety equipment").
But to me, the temporary wooden stuff looks safer than the finished concrete sections, railing and all. Likewise, I'd feel safer on 25 stories of well-lashed, good bamboo than 25 stories of old metal rental scaffolding that's not set up correctly.
That Huashan cliffside path looks pretty good to me- very simple, and in good shape. Just have to pay attention (and buy a harness, it's worth it). They even have CCTV cameras, so if you fall, you'll become a famous YouTube star. :D

The OP article looks a lot like the kinds of things folks did in the U.S. working on the dams out West, and other large projects during/after the Great Depression. The infrastructure built during that timeframe are still some of our most interesting achievements...

No risk, no reward.
