[NA] Things That Go Boom

That's just awesome! No Pew, Pew, or Pew Pew Pew!

I've been thinking pretty hard about building an AR in .308. I "need" something that can reach out and touch in semi-automatic fashion. Thought about an M1A, but I'm pretty sure I can do it much cheaper with the AR platform.

You might do it cheaper, but you wont do it cooler than an M1A!

My Firearms Anonymous intro would go something like this: "Hello, my name is Jeremy, I like in Oklahoma, and I have never fired a gun."

I had some guns once. I forget exactly how big the bullets were that they shot. But, they were pretty loud and it hurt my hands when I shot them. I lost them all in an unfortunate accident at sea a few years back. Since I'm sure guns will all be a thing of the past in this kinder, gentler world that our soon to be elected government will provide, I haven't bothered to replace them.
Gotta love the pussification of America

That was exactly the article I was thinking of when I posted this. Hey, you wanna buy a bridge in New York? ;-)

True dat. However, a pimped out AR-10 is a beautiful thing as well. My good friend put one together a while back, and it's a tack driver, with lotsa punch, and almost no recoil. It's pretty darn light to boot. It's apples and oranges, and I like both. I'm an equal opportunity gun enthusiast

Nice! Can't beat the reliability of the ol' J-Frame S&W. If you got boolits in it, it'll go bang. My mom carries the snub nose "airweight" S&W in .38 Special. She can out shoot me everyday of the week, and twice on Sunday. Seriously.

I haz, in order of acquisiton:

Sig P226R .40
M1A SOCOM II
AR-15 (off list lower, California legal)
GSG-5
Remington 700 PSS .308
S&W M&P Shield 9mm

I love them all for different reasons. I'd pick my M1A over an AR-10 any day of the week and twice on Sunday.

I just picked up my first 80%, to see what it's all about. Not an AR-15, but a Glock lower, slightly modified, but still designed to run everything Glock. Going to build a Glock that doesn't have a single factory Glock part in it.

I can't decide if I'm too lazy to build from an 80% yet. Nor if I feel like finding a CNC machine or just taking a lot of slow effort with a drill press.

I've got three pistols. Springfield XD-40, Bersa Thunder .40 and a Sig 9mm. The Bersa and the Sig are my concealed carry.

I've got some rifles too but they're all AK-47s according to the media. My favorite is my Tikka .270 I've got a couple of shotguns, one for trap and one for hunting.

That is GREAT!!!!! Kinda a poke in the eye to the people's republic of Kalifornia

Well and a poke in the eye to those who take the Gadsen flag just a touch too seriously... But yeah. It's funny.

Wish it'd be finished and put on a finished rifle. Here, take my money! Haha.

I know, right? HF has a pretty inexpensive milling machine that would work well for those 80% lowers

Seriously, you know you have a problem when you have to yearly buy additional gun safes.

Got me a new shootin' iron today! Thought we may have a few gun guys/gals and thought I'd share. By all means, if you like to talk about or show off guns, do it here.

Today's catch: Ruger SR1911 Lightweight Commander

I live in the people's republic of Massachusetts, I can't buy the gun you just bought because it is not legal to buy in this state. Our attorney general just outlawed most semi auto rifles too and may have unwittingly outlawed most semi automatic pistols, even the ones she previously approved. You can't make this stuff up, some members of congress want to model the federal gun laws on Massachusetts. Watch out folks. Elections matter.

That sucks. Hard to imagine something like that down here, where we can carry a hog leg on our hip.

You gotta buy bigger safes!

As do recalls. That's how the electorate here voiced their displeasure. Three politicians lost their jobs, two recalled successfully, one "resigned" so they could appoint a replacement from the same Party and took a nice cushy consulting job for the Party's "leaders".

It's worth it. Recall them.

I do own a 1200fps break-barrel pellet rifle with scope for the varmints, lol. I've always been in a quiet suburb, and I don't hunt, so I've never had the opportunity to shoot/own. I have plenty of family who hunt/carry, but I've just never taken them up on going to the range/hunt.

SoonerAviator, my good man, you need to go choot some chit. You might dig it.

I'm not a fan of the Airweights. Large-enough grips to make them not-painful to shoot defeats concealability. I do have one, I load it with target wadcutters, but I much prefer a Colt Detective Special.

Anyway, I went to a Bullseye match yesterday. I sometimes shoot a S&W Model 17, but I was shooting a Ruger 22/45 with a red-dot. Part-way through the timed-fire portion, it began malfing. In the second string of rapid-fire, I got off three rounds from the first magazine, two from the second. In the alibi refire, I got one bang and it malfed again. That meant that I had four zeros and, when you give away 40 points, it's pretty much game-over.

I picked up the Model 17 and fired it for the last string of rapid-fire (shooting single-action). Shot a 92-2x.

I detail-stripped the Ruger and its magazines and cleaned everything. But still, next match, I'm going to shoot the revolver.

Frigging bottom-feeding, self-littering guns may be all right for up close and personal work, but when I need to make every shot count, I'm reaching for a wheelgun.

If by 'up close and personal' work you mean THAT kinda 'up close and personal work', no theyre not good for that either. I never carry a gun for THAT kinda work if it hasnt been vetted with a lotta rounds. Also I dont keep guns that dont work. That Ruger would be on the selling block if it was mine.

Yeah, I know it. I'd actually like to have a 12ga or 16ga pump shotgun for the wife to use for personal protection when I away, despite living in an extremely-low crime area. My sister even has a few handguns, since her (now ex-) husband is a LEO. MY mother even has a handgun she has never fired, which is more of a danger to her if there ever was a break-in! I'll have to grab it sometime and go to the range.

Right on.

I live in a small town with low crime also. We don't lock our doors, and if you need to borrow a vehicle, the keys are in it. Personal defense is obviously a great use for the guns I have, but I really have them because I like guns. I do a bit of hunting, but pretty much all of my hunting could be done with only two guns. The 12 gauge for fowl, and the 30-06 for deer and hogs. I do like to have a handgun handy, just in case, but I have never in my life felt a need to have one for defense (other than from feral hogs). However, I reckon it's better to have and not need than to need and not have. Anyway, I live in a rural area where shooting is just part of life, and it is convenient because of the wide open spaces. Heck, up until I was in high school ('98-'02) when they went to gun free school zones, it was not uncommon to see a shotty or a deer rifle hanging on the gun rack against the back glass of the high school kids trucks. It's just part of rural living. I've been to a range once or twice, and if that's all the shooting I could do, I probably wouldn't be into it, so I certainly understand your lack of interest. That said, I think it is wise these days to have something for personal defense, particularly living in a city. I don't mean you carry every day or anything, but something to protect your home or for your wife's protection, should the need arise. A shotgun is a good choice. A blind monkey could hit a perp with one of those, and it's likely that a common thief would flee the premises just by hearing your bride rack a round into the chamber of a pump shotgun. But, consider yourself warned, boomsticks can be addicting.

It would be my pleasure to take you shooting if you ever want to fly down to Lindsay.

20 gauge is a good choice, IMO. Depending on how well-stocked your local stores are, 16-ga can be hard to find.

Kahr PM 40 (carry)
M&P .40
M&P .22
Ithaca Model 37 16ga
Remington 870 12ga
Remington Springfield M1903 - one of the last milled receivers based on serial number.
Mfgr Unknown 12ga (picked up in my $1500 lot acquisition)

Looking for a lever action of some type -I'd like .243 but kinda pricey for what you get, and maybe a .40 variant of an AR.

Well, I had been avoiding putting my list of arms on the interweb, but what the heck.

Marlin N25 .22 (bolt action)

Oddly enough, I was a last minute chance phone call away from growing up in Lindsay. Father was going to take a job in the mid-80's with oilfield down there when he had packed up all of our stuff to move from Enid. I was about 2yrs old at the time and dad had gone back inside to get something and heard the phone ringing. Ended up being another job offer from someone in Muskogee which was a better fit, so they changed plans and looked for a place half way between Tulsa (mom's job) and Dad's job in Muskogee, so Broken Arrow was the geographical mid-point.

Very interesting. Too bad he didn't take the job here. It's an irrefutable fact that the finest people in the world grow up in Lindsay, America ;)

Not trying to sound cheesy, but we might have grown up as chums had he taken the job. Sounds like we're close to the same age. I'm an '83 model.

They're pretty rare. If I remember correctly, the transitional Remingtons between the Springfield M1903 and the M103A3 only numbered about 30,000 or so. One that is in pristine condition is worth some real coin.

Unfortunately my grandfather (like many others) sporterized it.

Saw someone asking $2400 firm for a 1944 non-Navy 1911-A1 this week.

Love my 10mm, the first modern caliber, in CZ design from EAA (no, the other EAA).

Most fun: My Beretta FP1201, it's just bad ass fun to go to the range, set up five milk jugs full of water, and blast 'em as fast as you can pull the trigger. Always a conversation starter.

One of my work colleagues has a Springfield 1903 (not sure which variant) that was handed down from his dad who served in Korea. Not sure if his dad used it in Korea or not. I think they had been mostly phased out of regular service by then. Anywho, it's in fantastic original shape. I tried to buy it, and failed miserably. Don't blame him a bit for hanging on to it. I would too.
