Going to visit the falls this, um...fall.
Should I overnight on the US side or the Cdn side?
Trying to avoid crowds, tourist trappy stuff....but still need above ave accomodation, as long as its not stratospheric in price. A view would be a plus.

Presidential Fallsview Whirlpool Suite at the Four Points Shearaton. Mary and I had a blast. Fantastic view, free pass on the shuttle to get around to all the places to see. I don't thibk we had to drive for the four days there. Within walking distance to the falls.

We drove the last time.....the next trip will be by plane. KIAG and a taxi to the Canadian side, much cleaner and more to do and see.

Most definitly stay on the Candian Side. I second the Sheraton. BUT if your looking to avoid tourist trappy well Good luck. Everything there is tourist trappy. It cannot be avoided.

If you have a car, drive a bit further into Ontario and stay in St Catharines. Take the 420 north to 405 west (aka QE II Highway, which is the 285 on the NY side). Won't have a view of the falls, but close to Lake Ontario which is also nice. And you're only 10 sm from the falls.

Best part? Gets you away from the tourist extortion.

Welland is another option, again, about 10 miles from the falls.

Unfortunately when I go back, I stay with relatives in Buffalo. Cheap but I'd rather stay on the Canadian side.

Remember the passport. Don't worry about $US-$CDN, it's almost equal right now.

The New York side should be visited at least once to see what central planning and government oversight can do to a place.

There have been many books written about Niagara Falls, but one line I remember in the several I have read: "The mayor had a three part plan for revitalization: Buy up the old buildings, raze them, and watch the new businesses come in and build on the cheap land. He got parts one and two done..."

This is the last I read. It's quite disturbing, but a good overview of the New York side (http://www.amazon.com/Inventing-Nia...=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1278355353&sr=1-6)

What 95% of tourists don't realize is how altered by engineering the falls and the area are. On most days you're only seeing about 30% of the potential water flow -- and much of it is channeled to provide the broadest swath of water.

And don't forget the Native Americans (I forget which nation) retrieved its lands and voila! Another casino.

The Seneca (part of the Iroquois), who fought against the colonies and sided with the British, conducting a series of raids along the frontier. The majority of the land involved was not in dispute and had been purchased legally.

Niagra on the Lake is the destination I would recommend. It is a short drive from the falls, very beautiful and absolutely charming.
