Hello ever-helpful POA tech-savvy people.

Is there a way to make an iphone contacts list...portable?

I don't always have internet but sometimes need to have a copy of names & addresses in a file on my laptop.

It would also be extra useful if it could serve as a backup in case I lose/break the phone and for some reason icloud doesn't want to provide my data.

Thanks!

If you sync it to a desktop I would suspect it'd be easier to liberate the data.

You should be able to sync them to the desktop through iTunes, or directly with iCloud via a desktop contacts application that supports CardDAV.

Of course, that assumes that you have the iPhone set up to sync the contacts to iCloud in the first place (as opposed to just backup to iCloud).

Dave,

Not sure what kind of laptop you have and what you're running on it, but I simply use iCloud to sync contacts across my iPhone, iPad, and laptop. Works like a charm, and as soon as I make an update on one device it appears on all the others automatically, no full sync required.

Or if you have access to an Exchange server, just use that.

Hmmm....Android seems to do it automatically for you through gmail. That's unfortunate for iPhone users...

Dell Latitude; Win7, Kent.
When you sync contacts, where on your laptop does it appear? In Itunes or on another program??
Much obliged,
Dave

Never used gmail on a desktop?

Gmail on the desktop from a web browser, yes, but that wouldn't seem to help the OP, who appeared to be asking for a local export of contacts.

As for seamless syncing, iCloud works far better than Google's system, though iOS devices sync just fine with Google, despite Google's non-standard implementations of IMAP, CalDAV, and CardDAV (and ActiveSync).

Gmail allows you to export contacts to a desktop file.

My experience with the details of Gmail's web interfaces are limited, primarily because it's a bit inflexible compared with syncing to a desktop client. However, at least in the case of Outlook, Google Sync leave A LOT to be desired, but many of the same limitations appear to be present with other clients syncing to Gmail as well.

Couldn't be simpler:

1. Load up Gmail
2. Go to Contacts
3. Select all contacts (or whichever ones you want to export)
4. Click More->Export, and choose your format

Its actually easier than doing it from Apple Mail or Outlook (at least, fewer steps). Google Sync is horrible, and only exists because Blackberries used to not support contact sync, and I think iPhones used to (or maybe still doesn't) not work either
