[NA] In other news, carbon monoxide poisoning

What a way to be found dead...

Good way to go out? :dunno:

Just kiddin', sad deal.

I would choose a Pinto over the Yugo. I want to go out with a BANG!!

Yes....you can find double meaning that last sentence. Thank you and goodnight....be sure to tip your waitress.

I can think of alot more worse ways one could go. I mean, atleast they were enjoying themselves in the last moments right? Nonetheless that is sad.

In 2015 there was a family of six near Fenton, MI who died when there was a long power outage. The father set up a generator in the family room and ran it overnight. The family never woke up in the morning. I find it hard to believe in this day and age anyone could not know the consequences of such an act.

Exactly.

Same thing happened in MD in April 2015. Dad and his 7 kids died when he ran a generator indoors.

You would be surprised. There is always someone who has to "one up" the dumb ass meter.

If that car had a decent catalytic converter, they'd be alive today. Still, a rookie move to run the engine inside a closed garage.

Explain. I don't believe a catalytic converter has any effect on CO production by an internal combustion engine.

A modern 3-way converter oxidizes CO to form carbon dioxide; also reduces NOx and unburned hydrocarbon emissions.

Years ago, when Saab came out with their Trionic engine management system (with a catalytic converter at its core), they proved that tailpipe emissions were actually cleaner than induction air. IIRC, it was done in a city where air quality wasn't great to begin with, but impressive nonetheless. And that was probably 20 years ago!

A) Natural selection at work.
B) Typical bad reporting by uneducated morons who don't know anything about anything. Yay, right? The Skoda Felicia is not an econobox, it is a family sedan. (by European size standards) The CitiGo is a nice econobox! And turning on ignition does not kill people, only the battery. *rolleyes*

There is a reason that the newer cars with the push button start/stop have timers now, people were getting out of them in the garage and forgot to turn them off. Several people died and the families sued the automakers, so now a car that is idling for a certain period of time will ask you to confirm that you want it to stay on, if you don't respond it shuts itself off. You can bypass it, but it has to be bypassed each time, it will default back to shutting down.

Thanks for the reply. I didn't know the cat reduced the tailpipe CO so completely. According to the linked story I found, there is still a possibility of CO poisoning with a newer car.

Two methods stand out. One is the fact that until the cat reaches operating temperatures it is ineffective. The other is that in a closed space (like a garage) the latent oxygen in the space will eventually be consumed by the cat as it makes the conversion.

So close to that annoying phrase heard at pilot funerals after accidents.

Well at least they died doing who they loved.

That's the one. Or close enough.

Modern cars are really good at employing strategies to light off the cat quickly. Retard timing, dump some fuel in there and get a fire burning quickly. A smaller pre-cat, upstream of the main cat, heats up more quickly still so it's even more effective at reducing cold-start emissions. A cat's ceramic honeycomb matrix (or sometimes metal foil) has a TON of surface area, so that helps too.

Garages aren't air-tight, so there's that. A modern car that's emitting harmful amounts of CO has an emissions control system that's simply not functioning correctly.

The takeaway is that if you want to kill yourself in a garage with CO, borrow your crazy uncle's '70 Nova.
