I need to replace my old HP1100 laser printer at work. Good old workhorse but its time for a new one.

Needs:
-very basic printer only, not scanner, not fax, not copier.
-B&W only, simple text from Quickbooks or Word.
-usually print one page at a time, rarely more.
-one sided printing.
-usual 30, max 100 pages per day.
-connects to one computer which has a MS home network to one other computer. It is helpful if the printer can be accessed from both computers as they are now, in the event of one printer failing.
-pages per minute (ppm) is not that important, however it is nice if the first page does not have a delay as that makes people wait (its a point of sale location).
-50 page capacity is about all that is needed.
-12"x12"x12" is about the size of the HP1100, something similar would be good.
MS WinXP although expecting to go to win7 soon.
-<300$ should do this.
-will be considering cartridge prices too.

Brother.

How is this connection made? By Ethernet to your home network? Wireless?

I have the Brother HL-2070N (the N was their Ethernet networkable suffix). Bought the newer HL-2170W (which has 802.11 Wireless and wired Ethernet, and they decided to drop the N from the name) for my Dad.

Looks like the newest model is the HL-2270DW, which in addition to Ethernet and wireless, also does duplexing!

If you don't need the Ethernet or Wireless connections (i.e. just USB connection), go with the HL-2240.

Way under $300.

HP P1102W; simple, fast, quiet, has both USB *and* wireless, so no printer-sharing setup needed. This has become my new office standard printer; Sandra runs a mega-buttload on it every day, just works, fast first-out, faster subsequent pages, quiet.

HPs are superior in that, when you replace the toner cartridge, you also replace the drum. Virtually every other brand has print-count mandatory replacement of the drum, even if it works fine.

Plus, HPs are high-enough volume that aftermarket toner is readily available.

Staples has 'em for $149.00-ish, pretty common for a sale price of $99.00.

Spike says, "Check it out."

The HL-2270DW is $99 at Amazon + $5 shipping, extra high capacity cartridge was $51.

Just what I've been looking for, so I just bought one.

Thanks Rich!

YW. Plus, Brothers run great with Macs!

Dave, Joe's mention reminds me that all lasers come with a "starter" toner that doesn't last as long as standard ones.

Picked up a Brother (Not sure of the model). It's a bare-bones laser. It's the one-step down model from the wireless. I got it for my daughter for college. It was on sale at OfficeMax or OfficeDepot for about $50.

The starter catridge claims around 1000 pages.

She got it up and running on her Mac in less time than it took to get it out of the box.

My experience is, for most non-business users, even the "starter" carts in lasers are pretty robust. YMMV.

Inkjet, all bets are off.

I agree but I always have a spare cartridge on the shelf.

I'm convinced all printers have a sensor that determines how badly I need the document printed RIGHT NOW and only run out of toner/ink when it's above a certain threshold.

Don't touch my tinfoil hat!

Amen, brother!

Brother 2140, typically less than $130. My work uses them and they're very cheap to buy toners and drums for.

If you'd like something a bit nicer watch for the 4040cdn to go on sale. Color, network, duplexing, et al. A bit more expensive, but I got mine for $240 w/ free shipping. Heavy beast though.

HP 1018. Small footprint, fast, robust. Uses the 12A cartridge, which is huge.

I standardized all my equipment around the 12A cartridge.

Agreed, Doc - I have eight of the 1018 and its cousin, the 1020. Rock-solid, big toner capacity, and recycled cartridges readily available.

UN-fortunately, out of production.

So my new standard is the P1102W, referenced above. Still inexpensive, and faster in the bargain.

I've have a Brother networked laser with duplexing. Works great and cost less than $200. HL-5250DN. Don't think it's a current model but there are several duplexing option for the same money. Much cheaper than inkjet per page. Save the HP color for photos.

We are still satisfied with our $50 Brother HL-2140 laser printer (it's the non-wireless version of the printer that's advertised today in Rich's post.) I just looked at NewEgg.com to get a price on the replacement toners - $43.50 +$2.00 s/h. It's $68 at OfficeMax. That's the high capacity, 2600 pages, toner cart that both those printers use.

I purchased, and just today fired up the one Spike suggested, speedy!
Thanks, all.

Just a PIREP. It arrived in about a week. Plug and play with Windows, had to download a driver for Linux but pice of cake.

Works well, and fast really does do better than 20 pages (sides) a minute. Love the duplexer.

For a $100 laser I'm really happy.

I'll have to start listening to Rich more often. Just kidding, his advice has always been right on the money.

In that case, "Buy a Maaaaacccccc!....aaaaand an iPaaaaaaddddd"

Well, thanks Joe; I do my research. I was actually surprised that Brother had a 2000 series model with a duplexer! That was usually on the higher-priced models, like the 5250 mentioned a few posts back.
