(NA) Ask as a noun?

The only thing worse than nouning a verb is verbing a noun.

Or adjectives becomin nouns!

I've always assumed that was just a shortened version (no pun intended) of "ask[ing price]".

Traders shorten everything...

"What's the ask?"

It probably started that way, but it's been convention for as long as I remember. It's used in printed and online quote summaries, as well.

If I had to guess, I'd guess that saving a few characters in newspapers and other paper quotes also had something to do with the shorthand becoming the convention.

Why do I keep parsing this as "Ask a nun"?

Dang, its on the interwebz, it must be a thing.

I used to think the English language was pretty set in stone with some 'rules' as it were. Unfortunately not. It is an evolving (and not for the better) language. Of course, this coming from a guy that says 'f%#k' a lot...

This is the first I've heard of it.

Other than in the context of markets, me, too. Dumbing down of the language. Fortunately, I don't have to deal with "corporate speak" anymore. I'm retired and the consulting clients I have don't talk that way. :)

You are repeating yourself Howard.
