I have a friend who has the front top portion of a school bus w/the lights intact. He has it mounted and wants to make the lights flash (blink). I need help locating the supplies I'll need, as well as instructions on how to wire it. The instructions are the more important of the two requirements.

Bonus points if you can post links to where the purchases can be made online.

Just use the electric system from any Triumph motorcycle....oh, wait...you said blink not flicker. Nevermind
 
Well, we could do this mechanically: slow motor turning a metal blade against a pair of metal contacts.

Or thermally: bimetal contact switch.

Or discrete electronics: RC circuit on a Schmidt trigger.

Or integrated: 555 timer (do they still make these?)

Or programmatically: Raspberry Pi, Arduino, PIC16.
 
Need more info, mounted it where? Car, truck, wall?

But I'd do an Arduino/Pi and a relay personally. Can hack this up in an hour.

He has it mounted on a wall and just wants to be able to flip a switch to turn the lights on and have them flash.

A heavy duty flasher would do that. Just wire the flasher in series with the lights.

This. And no, you don’t need a schematic. Just find the two wires that go to each bulb and provide 12VDC. Wire red in series and yellow in series.

Does he want to choose whether yellow or red are blinking? You’ll need an SPDT switch.

If they’re LED lights, follow polarity.

....

Or just wire up a 12VDC power supply to all four lights in series and plug the power supply into a Clapper*. And tell him to applaud. There’s your flasher. LOL.

More fun that way. Make him work for it. It’d be a “short bus” simulator that way. Haha.

*Note. The Clapper doesn’t have a grounded plug so your 12VDC supply must not either, no chassis ground. But that’s just a Clapper thing.
 
I doubt you’ll even need to buy a flasher relay / the bus probably already has one you can wire into.

Free beats cheap.
