- - where's the plane? The pilot got out, came back and removed the plane.

Sounds like this might have been an ultralight or at least a light sport airplane. It appears that the "airplane" has been operating from a nearby field for a while and moving anything bigger by oneself seems kinda tough.

And in any case if the damage was minor, I think the pilot was perfectly legal in removing the aircraft from the scene without contacting authorities.

Oooh, there's nothing that will drive a government agency crazier than a plane crash that is taken care of by the person responsible. Even though there weren't any injuries or damage, beyond the plane, somebody has to be punished! Bureaucracy must be set in motion!

And who says the plane was even damaged. I have had people report an Ultra Light Crashed in a feild , when I simply landed my sailplane there and was waiting for my trailer to arrive.

It was kind of funny having the Sheriff, an ambulance, and a fire truck show up to watch me eat my lunch while sitting next to the sailplane.
