Rather suddenly found myself working (nights) in MB through Sunday ... anybody in the area want to meet for a meal, or... do some flying?
I'm jonesin' to fly, but not having much luck finding a rental. Went up to Grand Strand, and the school there said they have no instructor available for a rental checkout until next week (after I leave).
If anyone around here is going flying and needs gas money, I might be able to help. :)

Also: anyone know of any taildraggers for rent or transition training somewhere in this area? I have my endorsement but would settle for some dual just to do some flying. I think I heard of a freelance instructor with a Champ around here, but can't seem to find any details online... ?

Sadly I'm on the other side of the state, otherwise I'd join ya. Enjoy the beach though!

Sorry we missed you we flew out on Monday.

There are not a lot of good rental options but you might try the flight school at the Conway Airport.

"...not a lot of good rental options..." Ain't that the truth! And not many instructors, apparently...the counter staff at Grand Strand asked me if I wanted a job; LOL.
Maybe I should stop thinking about buying a plane and start thinking about getting that CFI cert...

Thanks for the tip about Conway... I didn't see a listing online for a school there. Maybe I'll drive up there tomorrow and have a look.

I had the same problem with Grand Strand - they're a good FBO (not cheap, but good) but getting flight time with an instructor is a mega-PITA.

Well, there was no plane available at Conway today, so i bit the bullet and drove up to Oak Island. A little voice told me not to call ahead, and I'm glad I listened... there's a very fine Waco up there, available for rides, and i decided to take a hop because I'm a sucker for old biplanes.
There's another one closer, at Grand Strand, but I'd passed on that earlier, figuring with the 2-person hole up front it'd just be a ride.
But I spontaneously decided I'd rather have a ride than take some dual in a 172... it was a fine day, and this plane is just gorgeous.
As it turned out, nobody else was there to split the cost with me... still under the biplane spell, i agreed to pay the full $120 to have the front hole to myself.

Very glad I did, because when the pilot showed up and found out i was a PP with some tailwheel time, he said "I guess you don't want me to put the front stick back in, do you?"
"Nahhh..." I said, "I'd just hate that... oh, OK; I guess I could fly it a little..."

:D

Naturally, I didn't get to take over until we were up and away, but he let me fly her up over Bald Head and just get a feel for the old gal, then flew it all the way back to the pattern, where he took over and made a fun barnstormer approach to 23. I found it quite manageable, although my feet would need more time to get acquainted- it's different (to me).

It would have been a blast even without the 0.3 of stick time, but I have to say I did a good job of obeying that inner voice today, and it paid off in spades!
"Nothing by chance", indeed!!

Jim and Laura are very nice, and the Carolina Belle is a real honey:
