You're too young, but Ben Stein was a Presidential speechwriter and has/had many other interesting jobs in addition to making commercials and movies. Not what I would call unintersting. And he's totally different in intereviews than that role in Ferris.

I take issue with this statement! I've met you face to face and you are nothing like Ben Stein. I agree that about all that was discussed at that table was pilot talk, but you are much more interesting than you think. You're also intelligent and well mannered.

I would suggest that you start giving girls airplane rides until you find an interesting one that ENJOYS flying.:D An airplane and the ability to fly it, should be a great chick magnet. When I was your age, all I had was a Letter Jacket and an old Ford.:dunno:

Seriously 7 hours is something to be proud of -- not something to be frustrated with. Try that drive in your car and you'll feel much better about your airplane. It doesn't matter what you buy you're going to want to go 30 knots faster.

If I wanted to get from Lincoln to New Brunfels tomorrow via the airlines, I would have to:

1.) Leave my house at 9:30 AM
2.) Drive 1 hour in my truck to the Omaha airport, leave truck, pay for parking
3.) Catch 11:54 AM flight out of Omaha to Denver
4.) Wait in Denver for 8 hours
5.) Catch 8:50 PM flight out of denver
6.) Arrive in San Antonio at midnight
7.) Rent car. Drive 40 minutes to new brunfels

If I was lucky I'd get there at about 1AM and it'd cost me at least $700 or so - my door to door time would be like 16 hours or something crazy.

Sometimes there is a shorter flight-- but even that takes the airlines 4 hours and would take me about 7 hours door to door. Think about that -- IF THE AIRLINES at their best can fly direct in 4 hours -- you're doing as good or better then them door to door.

Buying another airplane could be a mess and the operating costs of something like a Bonanza is substantially higher...and they make much less sense for local flights.

Why David is bitching about long flights is beyond me. He has no job, no girl, and no schedule to keep. Were I his shoes I'd probably be flying an old Luscombe, or something slower even.
 
Sounds like David needs to read Rinker Buck's "Flight of Passage" and Stephen Coonts' "Cannibal Queen" to put things back into perspective. ... or go find a Mooney! :D

I've flown two late model Cardinal RGs (both '76) and neither could do 143 KTAS in level flight. One with speed mods or a pristine airframe could probably make it, those numbers are in the book (I think even 146), but if your bird cruises over 135 KTAS, consider yourself lucky. Mine does 130 KTAS at 10 to 11 GPH. The other one I flew was more like 120.

But I agree it's a great IFR platform -- a little hard to find one that's well decked out by today's standards though. I was lucky in that respect. Speed and climb rate, not so much.
 
You shouldn't complain about something most of us cannot afford to have in the first place let alone not to have to work to pay for it. I'd love to have something to fly of my own. I go long periods without flying for lack of money and have years without any flying.

The more people have materially, the more they seem to complain.

The more a person has it seems like the more they want. However a girlfriend would still be a good thing for this kid.

I understand what hes saying. You guys keep calling him mature and well mannered and such but for our generation that doesnt really work out. Girls dont look for that.

It might APPEAR that the girls don't go for that, but I can PROMISE you that there is an attractive, mild mannered, interesting young lady out there that would be beside herself if she were to find a good guy with decency, smarts, manners and without enough piercings to prevent him from making it through an airport metal detector.

I'm old enough to know that you should be uninterested in the women who are uninterested in you. Try going to a University. They have lots of girls there, including ones with some degree of discrimination.

Kidding aside, a 177RG or 182 is a logical step up from a chickenhawk.

Neither of which are fast enough to make much of any difference. He isn't hurting for useful load.

Agreed, Toms suggestion of an EZ has been the second best,

The best being "keep the damn thing/quitcherbitchen"

Try 90kts at 12gph in a 182, hurts even more

Not at our age. David is a year older then me. When we get to be in our mid-late 20s early 30s the number of girls interested in more mature guys increases dramatically but until then its kinda not worth the effort.

Once you get into your mid to late twenties most of the eligible young women stop being eligible and start being married and pregnant. Geese, young women want the same as old women, for someone to really listen to them and really take them seriously. Problem is most young men are far too full for themselves to really do that. Now that I think of it, most old men are too full of themselves too.

A Cardinal RG doesn't have much if any more payload capability than a 172 but it does have longer legs and just enough extra speed to make it feel "fast" for a while. Besides, pulling that big round black knob out and flipping it up followed by the whine of the hydraulic power pack makes it feel even faster.

Perhaps. I'm just not that impressed with Cardinal RG's. I think they look *really cool* but that's where it ends for me.
