This is cool! A fellow pilot used the recently published Google Maps API to "extend" the maps functionality to something aviation related.

http://www.runwayfinder.com/

Click the "Chart" button in the upper right corner, so you can see Sectionals as the background. Zoom in (middle of the slider bar... any closer than that and you'll lose the Sectional). "Grab" (click and drag) to move the sectional map the way you would at maps.google.com. Note how the facililties that are on the map show up on the list on the right as you "browse" around. Click an airport name on the list on the right, and see the current METAR on the map as it "recenters" at that location.

Zoom in, change to Map or Sattelite or Hybrid view, then back to Chart.

Type in an airport identifier on the list at the top.

VERY cool...

That's not just the coolest aviation site of the year, that's the coolest site ever! All categories, all time!

That is seriously the best use of Google maps....(OK, so we're biased)

I was to able to zoom in at home and see the planes parked on the ramp.

Bravo Zulu!

Wow, you can see our runways at the farm on the satellite view. It must not be real time since the corn is brown now, though.

Cool site!

Where is this zoom slider bar, I cannot find it anywhere...

AWOL on my browser. All I get is an area about 1600 sq mi, so all I see is a lot of green.:dunno:

Being graphic intensive my connection yields less that stellar results when navigating the web page.
I'm just grateful that you can't see us out there sitting in our hot tub. ;)

It's cool, but doesn't seem to work in Safari. I had to go to Netscape. (Which is OK too, as long as I don't have to use Internet Exploiter.)

WAY cool web-tool. Gets my vote too.

Excellent! Thanks for the link.

Did you notice the color coding of the thumbtacks showing the airports? Current flight conditions from VFR on down, or no information available. Absolutely cool.

see if he will link it to airnav so we can, at a glance see what airports have the best fuel prices along the route!

I've had problems with some websites and NETSCAPE. One of those sites in particular IS MAPS.GOOGLE.COM. The other is MY BANK!

The answer is to use IE or firefox. As it happens, Netscape Version 8 uses both engines. I'd go to version 8 at home but I use netscape as my internet mail service. Version 8 doesn't have a mail service.

Yes, I’d like to include fuel price info. But I don’t want to grab it from AirNav. They have copyright notices all over their stuff. All of the info I’ve used so far is public domain. I’ll eventually work on adding a “fuel price” tab in the site somehow and ask pilots to update the prices.

Troy'

Wow this great. It is great for now we can at least "see" before we get there.

Thank you for finding it.

Terry,

You using 10.4 yet? I'm running OS X 10.4 and Safari 2.0 and it worked just fine for me.

I agree runwayfinder.com is a great site. In my post about it on my site I mentioned I would love to see the best $100 hamburger locations added to the map as well.

I had fun with the Google Maps API a few weeks back and made my own custom map the shows a marker for every airport I have flown to. You can see the map here.

Cool. You should make your HOME airport (base) a different color, so we can see where you started from on these journeys.

I can't get it to run right. Is my DSL too slow?

What's it doing (or not doing) that makes you say it isn't running right? I just tried it and it's working for me.

Its not loading, or do I just need to be patient?
