I'm OCD and the little plastic knob that you turn to open/close the rear passengers air vent in my Cherokee is missing. I've contacted all the scrap yards and can't find it. It's like an itch, I just HAVE to scratch it, I'm on a quest. Fast forward to tonight. My wife and I are going out to eat a the local strip mall at Outback Steak House. Situated next door to Outback is Radio Shack. I tell the wife "Gotta run in Radio Shack for a minute" My goal was to acquire new batteries for my A20 headset that has been flashing at me. I detour over to the switch, resistor, nerd section and LO AND BEHOLD!!!!! There in one of the cardboard boxes, full of resistors and logic chips, is an ENTIRE FREAKING PILE of my air vent knobs, virtually indistinguishable from the ones already on my plane. My thought is "This is a common knob that piper used and is still popular today". Then I start calculating, "buying from Radio Shack for bolt on parts can't be legal", "if they ask me what I need it for, I'm going to lie", then I start wondering if I've been flying in violation without the Piper approved vent knob attached. AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

Breathe.

Breathe.

Buy an RV-8A. Install any damned knob you want.

Problem solved!

There is no problem using that knob.. buy it, put it on and say nothing, it is common hardware.

You are making this up just to mess with is.

We know you are lying.

You said you found resistors, chips, and knobs at a Radio Shack.

That can't possibly be true.

I know a particular certificated airplane which has an inside door latch lever sourced from the Chevrolet parts bin (actually, 1959-1964 Chevrolet Impala), still a Very Common Part. Saw one listed on eBay as an aircraft part, starting bid around $80.00.

Clearly you must declare the aircraft unairworthy and remain on the ground.

I was just thinking of the insanity of it all, My plane uses an air filter for I believe an old Dodge, door handles from a Studebaker, common vent knobs, an electric fuel pump that can be purchased from about any auto racing supply shop for 550 bucks less than from Piper. Didn't the FAA put out a circular or something that could authorize the use of these parts for older planes in some situations?

So what your saying is.... If I start picking small items off do the cars I'm about to crush, I can get some really unexpected high dollar sales if instead of Dodge or Buick I say aircraft? Boy have I been doing this eBay thing all wrong! :D :D

If you get into boats, I hear mercruiser trim motors go for a good amount if you advertise them as aircraft parts for arrows too. I've eve seen some fuel pumps with ink jet PMA numbers taped to them. Im 99% certian that my brake fluid reservoir is a Marvel Mystery Oil can.

The price Piper gets for that thing will make you cry.
Don't ask me how I know. Is there a grab you ankles emoticon?

That comment was a joke based on this thread

http://www.pilotsofamerica.com/forum/showthread.php?t=43567

and others on VAF forms and the red board.

I knew that's exactly what you were referring to. I had to pull your chain a little.:) There are a lot of fighter pilot wannabees flying RVs and some are just idiots when it comes to overhead breaks etc. I think you'll find your trim crank is an old Chevy or Ford part. Don

Umm hmmmm... And when my generators needed a going over, my A&I sent them out to the local (gasp) auto electrical shop to have the commutators turned and new brushes and springs... He said they do better work than the expensive place advertised in Spam-Can-Trades...

denny-o

First question what's a A&I?

why would any A&P send out any generator? Brushes are 37 Chevy, 8 bucks at NAPA, and the commutator cleans up very nicely with 1500 grit wet and dry.

Owner supplied parts are legal.

I just read up on that.... Well actually skimmed the abbreviated version. In my former life when I worked in a tool and die shop a guy used to come in and have me fabricate helicopter parts for him. He had all the CAD diagrams and supplied the material. After I got into aviation I just assumed the heli was an experimental rig.

Dare I nod in agreement......(?)

I can tell you authoritatively that a tractor spotlight bulb from Farm & Fleet is indistinguishable from a C-182 landing light bulb. Do not ask me how I know.

You know because the bulb in your tractor burned out, and you were able to substitute a spare from your 182.

Right?

Piper wanted $250 for a door lock (they won't sell parts only, you have to buy the entire assy). Same spring and gasket from Ace Hardware to repair the doorlock cost $2.16.

My former 2001 Citabria came from the factory with home depot kitchen cabinet hardware on the window.

Parts is parts, eh?

This thread gives me hope. Ah the rebel spirit to fly is alive and well :)

Price a new fuel tank selector valve on a PA-32.. $12,000 and no that is not a typo I bet the MMO can is a bargin in comparison.

Our local Farm & Fleet actually sells the ol' GE 4509's in boxes that are specifically marked "Aircraft."

And how sad is it that they burn out enough that I can still remember the part number?

As long as you're not trying to get more light or longer life out of the bulb by installing a Q4509, you're safe.

My replacement 4509 just arrived from SkyGeek a few minutes ago. I changed the burnt one out, yesterday.....

I'm not going to get started on my rant about landing light bulb FAA certification making the world safe for the children, again.

On the Light Sport side, I had to get factory approval to replace the wheelbarrow tubes in my tires with Airstops.
