My love / hate feelings for locked threads...

The moderation system is very opaque and intentionally designed to be that way to the extent that even taking about moderation activities can get you disciplined or even banned. There’s no transparency in the process and as much as you claim to try to be fair and evenhanded both you and another moderator who has commented on this thread have to qualms about showing where you stand on certain political issues and other controversies which arise which makes your subsequent claims of being fair and unbiased appear disingenuous.
What kind of transparency are you expecting? We don’t publicly discuss what’s talked about within the MC.

There’s a reason that we don’t show where we stand on various controversial topics, because we try to be neutral, which is generally how the role of a moderator works. If we engaged in the highly charged subjects ourselves, what kind of message do you think that would send?

I do utilize the ignore function so I’m sure I haven’t seen all the comments here, but so far what I haven’t seen addressed is the MCs response to users intentionally locking threads in order to chill discussion that they don’t like. It seems a very well established pattern here that when certain people don’t like the way the discussion is going they signal the MC to intervene in their behalf and intentionally lock the threads. It’s so prevalent that people pride themselves in the ability to use the MCs power to do their bidding and flaunt that they are going to shut down a thread they don’t like then make it a pint of pride to get a post in before the MC obeys their command (“IBTL! Woohoo! Look how powerful of a bully I am.)
We don’t make moderation decisions based off what users tell us to do. If someone types ‘IBTL’ it doesn’t trigger us to do anything. The MC gets various reports all the time, but it doesn’t mean that we act on each one, just because that member tells us to.

…Sigh…the most difficult aspects of inclusivity are tolerance and acceptance.

Sorry, after all those TP pictures I got a call to stool and as a gastroenterologist once told me - “if you want a healthy colon, when you get a call to stool, you answer it.”

My phone did some autocorrections during my “call” which may have made my post more challenging to read.

Both you and @schmookeeg have made it clear where you stand on political issues, multiple times, as well as where you stand on people intentionally trying to lock threads by your “likes” of their comments as well as other comments you’ve made. If you think you’re giving the impression of being neutral you are mistaken.

Well, huh. Also huh?

I generally like trolls or anyone that makes me snicker online, which is often boorish behaviour because I'm a man-child at heart. If you ascertained any political beliefs from a shower of +1s, you're better at the internet than I am. I think I've laughed the most at eman's antics, so please let me know when he appears on a ballot.

Not that you asked or care, but I consider myself libertarian-leaning, Malthusian, and apolitical generally. I like animals more than people, and specifically ostriches more than most animals. I also prefer cities and oceans. I particularly dislike the red/blue flavor of politics, as it's so devoid of nuance or constructive opinion. My own family can regurgitate fox or npr at one another from their lizard brains, and often do. I have a journal of ideas on a new system of government that I twiddle with every once in awhile. Usually when I think the status quo is extra broken. It has been unpopular with those I've shared it with, though, so it will likely die with my estate.

I don't think I've held myself out as neutral; If anything I am capricious and inconsistent as a mod and try to limit my inputs there. I find myself in disagreement with the MC more often than not, but the fact that a group of people volunteer, daily, to discuss the merits of internet forum butthurt and narc reports at all is sort of "in the spirit of service", whether the results are precise, to your liking, or fair enough for taste. Everything reported gets read and discussed, often in great detail. Report away. FWIW I was recently outvoted when I proposed to give YOU warning points for trolling the MC with 4 whining reports in quick succession -- so maybe the system works. :D

Worth every penny you paid IMO. They do a pretty good job from my vantage point.

Opinions remain mine and not that of the MC. Luckily the good sense of the group often outweighs my own leanings and extremes. In exchange for tolerating me, I try to keep the servers configured and running, spammers out, and general janitor work on the technical side. If there is "you have a good face for radio", then "Mike has a good personality for code and computers"

I do encourage you to volunteer at the next MC draft. The board deserves people who care about it, even if I disagree with them. Sincerely.

$0.02. Going to go switch all the toilet rolls in the house now.

I like ostriches too. I'm also fond of penguins, elephants and baby rhinos. and owls and sloths. most animals, actually. maybe not cats. but most others.

Who looks at who "liked" a post in order to align them with a political ideology?! Seems like sour grapes.

Wait.... this is a good ole boys club? Full of sexism and homophobia? Where? Have y’all been sexist against me all this time?

Wow! With that kind of bio I guess this guy will have to settle for #2, then.

We are blessed to have such a gifted contributor to the community…

Okay, I gave it a fair shot and have thought long and hard about whether to hit the reply button because I don’t think my comments may be insightful, informative, or constructive.

When I mentioned I have to decide whether or not to remain engaged here, it was because POA should bring me enjoyment through participating in fellowship with my fellow airmen.

Instead, your continual posts of dissatisfaction with others not sharing your particular passions and persuasions for things oh so tangentially related to aviation does not do that and, to a degree, is symptomatic of a broader sea change. I don’t know the causal or correlating factors (if any) for that change, but the bottom line is I have a responsibility to decide if that changed space still brings me enjoyment.

In this instance I don’t know if it does and it’s not just about you contributing to that change. It may mean I hit the ignore button, hit the report button, or maybe take a break. At least reading the evolution of a thread that was clearly started in jest has been informative for my next steps.

But abject mockery of the volunteers that keep this porch available simply because long-standing and publicly posted terms and Rules of Conduct don’t meet your standards does nothing to advance civil discourse, aviation, or the forum. That’s just unacceptable behavior.

That sounds like an interesting cookbook you have there.

I've been on the board of directors of a couple of not for profit organizations over the years. Clubs, if you will. They all depended on volunteer labor to survive. Pretty much I noticed an inverse relationship between people that volunteered to help and carried their load, and those that just whined about things. Maybe a generalization, but that's what I do. I think the moderators here do a great job, and are way more patient than I'd be. As I grow older, I find myself ignoring my filter more. So in one recent meeting, when someone present made a laundry list of suggestions, I simply offered the suggestion that they didn't need to be there. Not tossing them out, just reminding them that I could have suggestions as well.

As far as tolerance goes, it doesn't mean asking everyone else to be tolerant of whatever you believe are sensitive subjects. It means being tolerant to the concept that things you may hold as sacred, other people find silly. Humor is a good thing. Can't remember the fellow's name, but a poet in the Balkins made the observation that racial and political jokes and insults are a method of communication and venting, even if incredibly rude. In his view, when the jokes stopped, the war followed. Or in other words, a lot of people need to lighten up. Myself included, I'm sure.

tolerance is not possible...a famous person once said, "You're either for me or against me".;)
Not that there's anything wrong with your statement, but...

Remember - only the truly tolerant can tolerate intolerance.

;)

I’ve never claimed to be very tolerant :)

Airplanes are dangerous.

You shouldn't fly them.
