Okay, P of A members -- here is information on the first (of many, we hope) fly in that we are organizing at our new place on Mustang Island, Texas. This one is primarily for Cherokee owners/pilots, but we probably won't make fun of you too much if you show up in another brand airplane... :D

Here are the tentative particulars:

Friday, 9/17
We will come fetch you at the airport as you arrive. (Mustang Beach Airport -- KRAS) We'll do a good, old-fashioned cook-out at poolside at our motel (the Harbor Inn) at 7 PM. You can check into your rooms any time after 3 PM.

We will then sit at poolside, tell lies, and drink massive quantities of beer, wine, and other evil liquors, till the wee hours of the morning.

Saturday, 9/18
We deliver breakfast to each guest, each morning, so you don't have to worry about b'fast. Sleep late, cuz it'll be outside your door in a sealed container, waiting for you.

During the late morning, head down to the beach. Lay around. Walk the island. Borrow one of our bikes. Do whatever. Most importantly, RELAX. That is what this island is all about.

Sometime mid-day, we'll all go on a Dolphin Cruise or fishing charter. That takes a few hours, and is a lot of fun. More beer will be consumed, of course.

We will then all convene at a local restaurant for fresh seafood, more lies, and more booze. (Basically, you can plan on staying drunk for two straight days, since that's what Mustang Island is all about, too. The motto here is: "Mustang Island: A quaint little drinking village with a fishing problem...")

After THAT, we can head back to poolside, where the lies, drinking, swimming, and hot tub soaking will continue. Or, maybe we'll stop at our neighborhood bar, the "Salty Dog". Or both?

Sunday, 9/19?
Well, y'all can sleep late, eat your breakfast when you wake up, spend the day on the beach, and we'll ferry you back to your planes as needed.

I don't have prices for food and the charter thing, as yet. Mary and I will supply the Friday cookout, but Saturday we'll have to all kick in something.

There you have it. No seminars. No meetings. No vendors. No pressure. Just RELAX with your fellow Cherokee drivers, and enjoy the hospitality of Port Aransas and Mustang Island.

As a member of Cherokee Pilot's Association/Piper Owner Society, Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA), Antique Aircraft Association (AAA), or Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA), you ALWAYS net a 10% savings at either of our motels -- but for this fly-in ONLY you will net a TWENTY percent (20%) discount. The room rates are as follows:

Single Queen, normally $99 -- fly-in price; $79
Double Queen, normally $109 -- fly-in discount $87
Double with kitchen, normally $119 -- fly-in discount: $95

Want to bring a pet? Add $25/night. We have some smoking-permitted rooms, too.

THESE PRICES CANNOT BE BOOKED ON-LINE. Call us, toll free, at 888-671-8088 to reserve.

Incidentally, this is being held in September so that (a) we're past the "high season" (and can give y'all a good discount), (b) it will be a bit cooler, and (c) we can get into the bars and restaurants with a group.

Sounds awesome Jay!!! If your down Texas way or near by you need to go to this!

I'm in, unless there is some HUGE reason I can't come down because of school. I'll probably be solo too, if someone wants to go from OKC and split a room. I'll know more on that last part closer in.

Hmmm... The timing doesn't work for me, but how about a couple of weeks later, say October 6 - 9 or so (e.g. for Leslie's B'Day)? How's the weather then? What's there to do around there? (Oh, okay, I'll go look up the other thread where you went into all of that...) :)

I've never been here in October, but I've been told it's lovely. Smaller crowds, cuz kids are back in school, make for more fun.

Unless, of course, you're coming here BECAUSE of the crowds of sun-bathing beach bunnies... :D

What's there to do? RELAX. Decompress. Take a chair to the beach, and an umbrella, and a good book. Listen to the waves. Hunt for sea shells. Go surfing, or para-sailing. Fish. Go out on the pier, jetties, or a charter boat. Lay around at poolside. Visit one of the gazillion bars, restaurants, and shops. Walk from the inn to anywhere in town.

Enjoy DRIVING on the beach, legally. Enjoy CAMPING on the beach, legally. Heck, drive all the way to Padre Island, if you want. (Better have 4-wheel drive, though...)

While you're doing all this, glance at the two horrendously ugly "high rise" (like, 12 story) condos that were built before the island outlawed anything taller than 35 feet. Thank God (or the city council) for having the wisdom to forbid the construction of such ugly monoliths BEFORE the view of the ocean was blighted. (See Myrtle Beach, St. Petersburg, Miami, and a host of other once-gorgeous beaches to see what happens when you DON'T outlaw these things.)

Marvel at the simplicity of the place. This is NOT a tourist trap -- it's a fishing village that happens to have a really nice beach. People here aren't out to fleece you, and you can still get a good meal here for less than ten bucks per person.

Even though we are tired, sore, and wish we were DONE with the remodeling (even though, in reality, we have not yet begun; we've only finished the outside areas of the property), Mary and I are ecstatic to be living here. It's gonna take another 18 months of concerted effort, remodeling all the rooms, but eventually we hope to spend some time ourselves once again enjoying the hospitality of Mustang Island! :)

No he said he would go for Leslie's B'Day I am sure he would not be looking at the view:D

Well, that all depends upon which "view" you mean. :D

Grant, very good answer.

Pipers, bah. I'm gonna fly the Cessna to Iowa City instead. ;)

Hey -- that works for me, too.

We're trying to figure out a way for us to attend our own fly-in pool party this year in Iowa City. That is turning out to be problematic at best... :frown3:

Jay, I'd love to come down, but unfortunately the third Saturday of the month is when we have the Wings & Wheels fly-ins at The 1940 Air Terminal Museum. Hopefully I'll be able to catch the next fly-in you have!
