Since I installed Microsoft Security Essentials from the microsoft site I have been inundated with popups from them on the bottom right corner 'Threats detected and cleaned'.
Full scan reveals some trojans which I selected 'remove' or 'clean' and it appears to be successful.
Googling 'MSE popups' or the warning text was not revealing.
I have been using MSE for over a year on 3 computers, could only the new version be this way?
WinXP SP3 Toshiba laptop.
Cannot see any options to disable the needless popups.

Did you just recently install it?

I've been running MSE for a couple of years now and I think once it got through its initial 'clean-up', it hasn't had any popups.

Dave, this message means malware is being detected by MSE and has been successfully removed. If you're continuing to see it, something is installing or trying to reinstall malicious software. You may need to run a 'HijackThis' scan and post the output to one of the (http://forums.majorgeeks.com/forumdisplay.php?f=35) forums dedicated to helping people with these insidious malware issues. Read the fifth 'readme first' sticky post on the link in the previous sentence. The MajorGeeks forum has some very talented volunteers...

Here's (http://www.winhelp.us/index.php/gen...crosoft-security-essentials.html#.T9OqQ5RZ4sQ) a page about MSE, and covers that popup you are setting.

As an IT professional, my first route is always MalwareBytes, Spybot Search & Destroy, and AdAware for the trifecta. after that, if the problem still exists, go over to the majorgeek site and follow their advice. So far I haven't had to go use HijackThis, but that's not to say it won't happen. No anti-malware software is perfect.

So you guys are saying I might have a virus or something in the computer now; not that MSE is rejecting attempts to install it?

(I say this because of the suggestions to scan with Malwarebytes etc)

I had figured MSE was simply working normally.... and in the past I had not been receiving notice of the threats it was blocking.

Yes this is a fresh install of MSE. I wonder if the newest version has the notification thing as an integral part of it now.

If it happens once, then MSE detected it and removed it. If it happens repeatedly, there is something there, whether it is a site you visit again that tries to install something, or if there is something on the computer that has yet to be detected, but its actions are detected, and the resulting action is deleted, only to come back again the next time whatever malware it is does its thing. I have no doubt that you have some kind of infection. Whether it is a virus, a trojan, or what, I can't say. Run the three programs I suggested above, and repeat until you get a clean bill from all three of them. If you don't get a clean bill after all three (and sometimes you may need to run them several times), go to the major geeks board.

Me too. These are best run when downloaded from a known clean computer, saved to a known clean USB flash drive, then ran on the suspected infected computer after it has been disconnected from the Internet / network and rebooted into safe mode.

If this is more than Dr. Dave feels comfortable with, following the instructions on MajorGeeks and engaging their step by step guidance would be best.

Is this on your computer on which you recently "fell back" to an older disk image? If so, I wonder idly whether that could be a factor...

It was Spike, but when I re-engaged that HD, first thing I did was get all the MS updates, install and get MSE running, check firewall on, update all programs, and it has worked peachy for a month or so.
