It's a laptop with Wndows 10. Did an update. Now there's this Breaking News thingy with weather and news and scores and all kinds of stuff. It's on my task bar. Googling tells me it's in Edge. I don't use Edge, not willingly anyway. My browser is Firefox. So I go to Control Panel/Programs to remove Edge. It didn't say wire money to account whatever. It just said No. Won't do it. Back to Google. Found some stuff I kinda understand. At least enough to follow directions about how to get rid of that 'heres the breaking news thingy." Didn't work. Any Y'all know what I'm talkin' about and what to do to make it go away? And neuter Edge as much as possible and make it leave me and my 'puter alone?

I don't have anything on auto. Windows updates, AntiVirus, flash, adobe, etc etc. Anything. I check pretty much daily, virus definitions sometimes more than daily. If I understand metered correctly, it's not going to affect me. Unless I'm on the road and not using my home connection, which doesn't have giga limits. Am I missing anything I should know.

Metered connections allow you control o etc updates that are normally automatic.

In one of the updates, MS added some crap that can't be turned off. And when they deployed the new Edge, they made it very, very hard to avoid setting as default - or even enter the OS without dealing with Edge.

More and more Win 10 and edge are becoming malware.

Does the remedy in this article work? MS apparently defaulted it on, without notice.

Anyone else still remember the government going after Microsoft for anti-trust violations because they bundled internet explorer with windows?

I see they clearly learned their lesson.

Yup. Antitrust was more of a thing back then. The 'trusts', aka Monopolies, have since bought more Legislators and Judges and it's not as much of a thing now. But you may start seeing more fights coming up. The battlefield is going to be News and Media.

Yeah, the Update hijacked my task bar too. I like Edge and prefer it to Firefox, but I hate MSN "news" and their brain-washing, left-wing propaganda machine contaminating my display, even if I try to ignore it. Just seeing the headlines and news sources makes my blood pressure rise. Now, if I could get my favorite weather radar site to show as a thumbnail on the task bar—that would be great! They can keep "News and Left-Wing Interests". Thanks to your thread, mine's now disabled. ;)

Only reason I have Widows on a computer is due to some software that is only available that way. Ubuntu is on everything else if possible.

Walk wide o' the Widow of Redmond,
For 'alf o' the Internet it owns
We 'ave installed and updated, with the CDs and downloads
An' we've watched the spinning disk 'til we're bored
(Poor beggars! -- it spins 'til we're bored!)

I like to run O&O ShutUp and O&O AppBuster after Windows 10 updates to see what new wonderful things they have given us. With ShutUp you can disable Win 10 from sending telemetry back to Microsoft and many other things. AppBuster can remove unwanted apps in Win 10. You have to be careful though as they have made it so apps like Cortana and Edge are integral to Win 10 and can't easily be removed without causing problems. Both O&O apps are free.
