Moving to Philadelphia for a new job!

Congratulations! Your question isn't all that easy to answer - lot's of options. Have a number of POA'ers in the area. Do you prefer a urban or suburban setting? As far as traffic, all depends, I-95 is the most direct route, but there are others. Traffic does get a bit messy in that area at rush hour. Feel free to PM is you have specific questions.

I grew up in the Philly "area", quite a ways north outside city limits (closer to Lansdale). Loved it. My home base was N70 Pennridge (I believe it's now CKZ). Have fun, Philly is a GREAT place to live, watch sports, etc etc.
 
There are some crap hole areas of that city...even in the suburbs. My recommendation is to find a temporary rental for a few months to learn the city and figure out where you ultimately wanna be.
 
I'm a city boy and live in a high rise downtown, but if I were to move to the burbs while still being close to PHL, I'd check out Media. More of a small town feel, and it's a beautiful area.

Mid-April is coming up quick - if you just need a safe place to stay that's close to the airport, check out Essington. There's absolutely nothing to do there except haunt a few bars, but it's safe and dirt cheap, and might be a place to set up shop for a month or two while you figure out your long term living situation.

Agreed. Philly is simultaneously one of the best and one of the worst cities I've ever been in. I'd look around for a while before settling on a place.

If you live or work in Phila, there is that thing called Philadelphia wage tax. 3.9% for residents; 3.48% for non-residents. PITA. Do know Phila airport is cut in two by the boundary, not sure how they classify someone working there (resident/non-resident). Personally, I'd look west of the City of Phila boundary, east of I-476; south of Rt. 3 and north of I-95 - but that's just me. Many more options if you can handle a longer commute.

Don't know about the prices, but Manayunk is cool and close. Wayne might still be good. Been 15 years since I've spent much time in either.

And where it's okay to park.

That show "Parking Wars" on A&E really demonstrated how tough it is to own a car within the city.
