This has been mentioned a couple of times. The tricky part is supporting the load of the airplane, more particularly the engine.
wings are off? I'd lean toward building a tilted support to the spar attach fittings. A cradle for the tail. Get the width legal. Tilting will reduce the height of the fin as well. Additional time for bracing on a tilt should be minimal. It may require some fabrication for fittings but it may be a practical option.
What model of aircraft is this?
How much does it weigh?
How hard would removing the engine be?
Rich
The problem is that I don't have access to the airplane for dimensions before hand and I'm still uncertain how to support the engine.
Horrible advice.
Cause an accident while willfully breaking the law, all the insurance in the world won't help you due to criminal negligence.
Get permits as required.
And, for all the people suggesting to rotate the plane, keep in mind that oversized loads also have height limits, so, depending on trailer deck height, and angle, and such, this load may be overheight., still requiring a permit.
Also, most oversized permits are dependent upon the load being "non-reducible". If it can be unbolted and hauled in another manner, including two trips, must be.
Well I called a firm that specializes in obtaining multi state wide load permits. Looks like it should be no problem at all. It will cost approximately $200.00 to get all the permits to include the fee charged by the firm. He said no chase car would be needed just proper flags and signs.
Looks like we are going to go up the week of Thanksgiving and will haul it back level on it's gear. Think I will attach a 10.5' 4x4 to the trailer gate and hang the wide load sign and flags from it to help make it more visible. Thanks for everyone's input!
Sounds like you have a plan, was just going to mention I see the hydroplane boat racing guys going down the highway occasionally and the boats sit on the trailer at 45 degrees. They all are that way so probably have something slick figured out. Post pics when the secret is safe to let slip.
Thanks hope it all goes as well as the plan is in my mind! I will start another thread with the unveiling when I return. This is an airplane my dad started building when I was 5 or 6 years old. It took him about 9 years to finish it. The test pilot flew the time off and dad never even got to ride in it before the new owner flew it away to it's new home. Haven't seen it since. I tracked the owner down and long story short it will be coming back home and dad will get his ride some day when it's back together.
So what happened? Never saw another thread.
Laws restrict width to 96" or 102" depending on the particular state and/or highway. Gotta have an oversize permit.
Check this for individual state laws.
