Is it true mobileme is going to be a paid subscription?
I am mainly interested in the find the iDevice when it gets lost.
If true....is there a free MobileMe clone?

MobileMe WAS a paid subscription, but Apple canned it at the end of June. iOS5 will have all of the features mobileme did, but supposed to work better.

Device locator still works and is available as a free app download on the phone / or website. You have to have an apple @me.com account and allow the use of locator on the phone.

We'll see about that. :D

Notice the "supposed":wink2:

I had mobile me for a little while, and used it to wirelessly sync my calender and contacts across devices. For that, it was wonderful and worked the way it should. Add something to the phone, it came up on the iPad. G/F added a calender event to her iPod, and I got it on my phone. VERY useful.

If they can get that functionality, but with pictures, texts, IM, etc. Id be happy.

I do all if that with Google calendar and Google sync. For free.

My wife and I could use a Calendar Sync capability. We use different mobile platforms.

Yeah, me too. And be sure to include the Male's Schedule Auto-Override feature! (given a choice between say, opera and drag racing - the singing conveniently gets bumped!)

I have and love MobileMe, especially for the Calendar sync across multiple things.

Kinda bummed that Apple is tossing the web interface though... I use that.

No many features are staying as part of iCloud, but I can find nothing that indicates that the web interface for non-Mac machines or Macs that aren't yours are staying. They want to sell more hardware, not offer web services, which is fine, but a bummer since their webmail interface really isn't bad at all on any supported browser.

Huh. I clicked the video link after replying and there's the mail icon on the web interface. Cool.

Funny that none of the press releases even mention mail staying on the web. An oversight that's very un-Apple-like. They made it sound like only Apple devices would be able to access it.

I use Safari on Windows machines quite frequently, not because it's a particularly great browser but because the bookmark syncing between machines and iDevices is flawless. All my bookmarks are synched perfectly and I've been a long-time user of services like XMarks for that stuff. It screws up my bookmarks at least once a year. MobileMe never has.
