Mesa AZ incident.

Was it an ‘up down’ or would you have to bid to make the move?
ORD was an up/down when I originally bid there, but separate facilities when I actually arrived. I was assigned to the tower, which was my preference anyway.

However, after the strike, the distinction between the two facilities was pretty much ignored-- you went where you were needed. Since I had radar experience, I was drafted to the tracon. Worked both up-and-down for awhile (the last ORD controller to do so), then ended up in the tracon full time for six years. Escaped back to the tower by accepting a supervisor job, which I gave back after a year.

So you resigned your ‘commission’, what next? When I was at LA Center, circa mid 90’s, there were so many Area Sups doing so, they started denying it. Your choice was stay a Sup or resign the FAA. It was an all the responsibility but none of the authority thang.

Those are the *exact* words I used when I went into the new Chief's office and quit.

Our longtime (and very popular) Chief had been declared too ORD inbred and removed from his position. The new guy came in and declared that the first step to "fixing" ORD was.... require the supervisors to start wearing neckties.

I'd only accepted the supe's job out of allegiance to the old Chief, I hated the job, and I don't wear ties.

So, on the mandated day, I showed up wearing a large mouth bass necktie, and while the Chief turned purple, we had that talk about responsibility without authority. Spent my last ten years as a tower controller.
