We are flying back to the home drome and want to take a 2-3 hour break on the 5.5 hour flight.

We are thinking about stopping in at Gen DeWitt Spain airport.

Any PIREPS on that airport? Restuarants around Beale Street?

We are going to UBER it into town for lunch and walk around.

Thanks.

not sure, but I just flew into Tunica and that is in the middle of nowhere, no food. also, MEM approach was real easy to work with.

Do NOT go to Rendezvous.

DO go to "One and Only" or "Germantown Commissary."

That is all.

There are several restaurants on Beale St and others nearby. Magestic Grill is good just north of Beale on Main. Rum Boogie on Beale is good as well. I work nearby Front/Beale St. Several places a couple of blocks north of Beale on Union Ave which parallels Beale St.

If you want some outstanding BBQ, "Cozy Corner" on the corner of US 51/Danny Thomas Blvd and North Parkway is great. It looks rough and there are folks from all walks of life, but it isn't walking distance from Beale, but would be a quick/cheap Uber ride.

Rendezvous is over-rated IMHO. I could have simply burned out because it is walking distance of the office and anyone who comes to office from out of town wants to go eat there. While you can often get lunch on weekdays, they aren't officially open for lunch except Fridays. Ribs are better then. I think rest of the week.

Germantown Commissary is indeed quite good, but it is nowhere near downtown. Germantown is all the way on the other side of Memphis/Beale St. Central BBQ is good as well with two locations, Central and Summer Ave. Personally, I like Topps BBQ too. They also have a great hamburger.

Germantown Commissary is really good. KOLV is closer to it than M01 is

DeWitt Spain is a nice little airport and a great place to land if visiting Memphis. Taking a Lyft to downtown should be a breeze.

If you want bbq, the Commissary is great as others have mentioned but if you are wanting to walk around downtown then it is not an option at all.

+1 on @N3368K suggestion of Cozy Corner if you really want bbq. Short ride from M01 but also not quite in downtown though not far but it would require an extra ride to go both there and downtown.

Lots of good places to eat along Main St. At least there was when I was still living there.
Local on Main Street is a good gastro pub.

What is this "walking around" and "taking a break" thing?

You mean some people get in an airplane and manage to fly under 8 hours in a day, and spend more than 20 minutes on the ground when a fuel stop is required? :dunno:

Eat fried chicken at Gus' you won't regret it. There is always music playing somewhere so just find it and relax.

My daughter and I flew to Dewitt over Christmas two years ago...friendly airport. The weather was great and we rode our fold-up bicycles to our hotel downtown ; it took us maybe 15 minutes, so an Uber might only be 5-10 minutes to Beale street.
I’m not into “consumerism” but the bass pro downtown is really worth a visit. The Memphis zoo was nice too.

Just what he needs for a couple hour layover. He’s not an airline pilot damnit.

Then he should plan an overnight so he can enjoy the beer or he can have a soft drink and blah bar food. :D

I agree, Gus's (their spelling) is some great fried chicken. If you don't like spicy though, you might not like it. I used to eat there frequently, but you have to get there early for lunch on weekdays or expect to wait forever. Since they opened one in Collierville, I eat there on weekends frequently as my wife likes it too. We frequently cater with them for work functions since they are less than 3 blocks away from office.

The Flying Fish on 2rd street north of Beale St is also very good. Eat lunch there from time to time. The Kooky Canuck, also on 2nd just north of Flying Fish is good. Texas de Brazil is across the street from them if you want a HUGE meal. Good food.

Aldo's pizza on Main between Union and Gayoso is a decent pizza if that is what you want.

We went to The Majestic Grill. We enjoyed it. We need to go back for a long weekend.

We landed at M01. The smell of SH*T was too much for my wife. It was worse than Amarillo on a hot day.

Is that normal there or what?

The FBO could not have been nicer. They got me fueled up and ready to go.

Did I mention the SH*T smell? OMG. I will put up with a lot for cheap fuel, but my wife may not let me land there again.

Yes. Normal.

Here’s why...photo below.

DeWitt Spain was a replacement for Mud Island Airport downtown which closed in 1970-71 when the I-40 Bridge was under construction at the north end of the runway.

Now there’s a place where a bad crosswind could really put you in the s***.

Funny you talk about crosswinds. There is a high bank on the west side of the airport. The windsock is above the embankment.

There was a direct crosswind and I was crabbing for it. When I flared, the crosswind disappeared and I did a pretty sh***y landing.

Don't forget to stop by and say Hay to Elvis.

With all of the youngsters listening to whatever caterwauling passes for their music, I wonder how long Elvis will remain "important enough" for Graceland to remain a profitable tourist attraction.

I do not think Justin Bieber will ever be as big an attraction as The King!!!:)
