Did these things suddenly become rugged?

I'm a huge fan of the Otterbox cases. I use their Commuter case now, most rugged one I've seen that doesn't add much size to a phone. I've used their Defender case in the past. That thing is so bombproof they should paint 'em orange and sell them to Boeing to house their flight data and voice recorders. Most of the OtterBox (Amazon link) stuff is pretty good. I've lost one on the airport, too... and no damage at all.
So they function as ablative armor?I've actually cracked three Otterbox Commuter cases.
But the phones survived just fine.

Back in my days over half the iPhones my friends had were cracked. A few looked shattered. No phone case around my phones. They go through lots of trouble take them thin, light and bezel-less. The last think I want to do is bulk it up, add a bunch of weight and add a big rubber or plastic bezel.
I've bounced my phones a few times off the ground and the latest generation of phones are stronger than they were when companies like Otterbox exploded and convinced everyone they need to put a condom on their phones.Back in my days over half the iPhones my friends had were cracked. Cases for phones are kinda like what those "real" rubber bumpers on cars used to be.
