Currently in process of an owner assisted annual on my Cherokee 180 and my mechanic and I noticed that my Marvel carburetor is seeping fuel, not leaking, at what we think is the gasket which joins to the halves of the carburetor body. We degreased, cleaned, and ran the motor but we can't determine where exactly the leak is coming from. He wants to exchange the unit for $900, I want to replace the gaskets. I can't find a gasket kit anywhere, only $500 rebuild kits which makes no sense to me. Anyone know where I can get a gasket kit for a Marvel MA-4-5 10-3878?

I re-gasketed mine at the last inspection. Pretty easy to do. I don’t remember where I bought the gasket kit, but it was an online source. I had to do a lot of cross referencing on the M/S website to identify the correct kit to buy, but after that it was simple. The only challenge was finding the right cotter pin to replace the one I had to remove from the float to replace the bowl gasket.

Twice now service bulletins have been issued to alert owners to the possibility of loose carb bowl screws. When the first one came out I checked the flight school airplanes and sure enough, one was leaking. A simple retorquing of the screws stopped it, but one needs to pry the screw lock tabs out of the way to avoid damaging them, then bend them back into place.

I've experienced that twice. In both instances, I started looking for a problem when I was getting a brief (unusual) hesitation when throttling up from idle. I assume the loose bowl was creating an induction leak that sealed under higher MP. I could be wrong about that. Both times I replaced the little tabs. I wasn't sure if they would hold up to repeat bending.

Lots of places can make you gaskets to. Take them the old gasket(s) as a template, and they make you new ones. One of my hobbies is restoring old motorcycles, almost always have to get them made.
