Make Me Jealous Of Your Airport

Is this Aeroflex? It looks very much like the airport where the Tailwheel101 series was made.

BTW, the only thing that might make someone jealous of my airport is $40 per month hanger fees.

Doc

That's cause it is where Tailwheel 101 was filmed!!! That and Trinca airport. I did my tailwheel endorsement with Damian. Great fun.

That DVD, and the follow up to it, were FANTASTIC! I brought both with me to Gaston's as possible movie night videos, but we didn't do that this year.

Petaluma is fantastic airport hands down. When I took my check ride from Santa Rosa (KSTS) the DPE took me there for soft field and short field landings and take offs.
Couple suggestions:
1. Don't pay much attention to the number of fake and real XCs your CFI wil take you to. The Bay area is complicated and the fields are different. It will help you a lot when you get your ticket and will be flying around.
2. I started my training in NC on non towered field. After my first dual XC I moved to the Bay area and continued my training at Hayward (KHWD). It set me back to another 20+ hours in my training because it was class D under KOAK class C under KSFO class B. I was overwhelmed by the amount of radio work need to be done to get to the practicing area over Discovery Bay. I learned a lot and I do not regret. I would suggest you to ask your CFI to take you to KHWD and do couple T&Gs there. That will help you a lot with the radio works.
3. My favorite destination in the area is Monterey Bay (KMRY). It is fantastic place to fly for a day. I don't have a pictures to back up my words. Will post them tomorrow. Ask your CFI to take you there and fly this route: O69 E16 KMRY. That way you will get a taste of the Bay tour and after you pass E16 you will get a couple minutes of silence till you get close to Monterey. At Monterey go to DelMonte Aviation and enjoy first class accommodation. They have $25 landing fee but usually they waive it for the the first time comers.
4. Ask your CFI to take you to the Bay tour and land at KHAF weather permits. However it wasn't the case for the last couple weeks. Once you get your license you will be flying this route a lot if you have friends. It is completely worth 1.5 hours of CFI time plus the plane.
5. Gnoss (KDVO). If you haven't land there yet go right ahead and do couple T&Gs there with your CFI. The hill close to runway 31 makes it quite an experience. Plus wind can change direction 180 between two sides of runway.
6. Sooner or later we all think "should I quit my training?". The answer is "No".
I'm based off Reid-Hill View (KRHV) now and rent for $105 C172 with Garmin 430.

We stayed very local, within walking distance for me! We ended up at Nate's in Addison.

It's rare that I'm able to make a gathering. When I noted that it was being held at Nate's (my favorite cajun restaurant in the metroplex area), it was an easy decision, however. :D

You guys got me all excited there. Thought you were coming to my house. ;)

I took this today, it's not my local airport, but it is my favorite local airport so far. 9G5, Royalton. This airport my CFI showed me a few weeks ago, he asked if I wanted him to land first, I said nah I got it :) 35x2500. Today they had a fly-in but the weather was terrible, there were only like 5 planes there, but half the town was there for breakfast. I hitched a ride with a club member in one of the Archers...

I can't make you jealous of KBED.

It's draw for me is that it's 6 miles from my house. I have the airplane in a heated hangar with the self service fuel just outside the door. And "my" two mechanics can work on my airplane in this heated hangar.

Bob, are you in the Pine Hill Hangars?

I'm at KBED too and it's not anywhere near as romantic a place as other posters' airfields, but it's conveniently located to me and the staff at Executive Flyers (owned by Mike Goulian's family) has always been good to me.

It's also where an F-18 has taken off from the active as I was taxiing. I've also seen an Osprey lift off and a C-130 transport so we get some interesting military action from time to time. Otherwise, it seems like your typical class D airport.

Took these with my crappy phone camera just yesterday:

Where are you guys finding his website link?! Please share Walt!

I just liked your FB page, but would like to read these stories. I'm based out of 52F, so I'll get over to see you sometime when I'm out practicing instrument approaches at GVT. Is there anybody doing PPC training out of your field? I'd like to learn to do that.

I don't remember exactly how I came up with the link, but at one point I was googling around for grass strips in East Texas to fly to. At the rate my training is going, I should make it there by October, but I don't yet know which year.

I used to have J7 (iirc). When they raised the rents again from $505/month to $606/month I bailed. It was stupid for me to pay that much money for a cruddy hangar...with ice collecting in front of the door, underneath the door, and inside the hangar because they didn't grade the asphalt correctly. not when I had the option for a spot in the HAFB Aeroclub's heat hangar. So now I'm on the east ramp.

Matt was good when I used him once for an annual. I won't publically post about the replacement IA - for your sake I hope that particular one isn't there anymore.

Ha. I could. If I could get some alligator. ;)

the restaurant at bass pro shop (can't recall the name) serves alligator ... wasn't that impressed when I tried it, but I suspect it's because everything was fried to "overdone" that day.

I live in New Jersey. I lose this competition before I even start competing!!!!

That being said, I have a bunch of tailwheel hours from 12N, which is a pretty sweet little aerodrome.

Aeroflex is probably the prettiest airport in Jersey...
and it's right up the road from me!

Thank you:

Petaluma is a GREAT airport. I've seen only a few others but feel it is "right" for me. We can easily go to ATC ones when needed.

1. We are now "past all that". New information: 3 "fake" XCs with diversions (so yeah each time I got to land at an "unknown" / new airport, just didn't go 50 miles away to do it). They landed at: Healdsburg, Angwin Parrett, and Rio Vista. 2 "real" XCs one of which was to a towered airport, both with flight plans, flight following, the works. They were to Stockton (Class D) and Ukiah. I've also flown to Santa Rosa, Novato, and Sonoma Skypark. 1 night XC to a towered airport turned non-towered (Sacramento Executive). Now I have "graduated" to solo XC which I hope to do this Saturday or Sunday.

2. This is one of many reasons I’m staying non-towered. I am taking more hours than I would have hoped to complete my training and don’t want a 20 hour “setback” somewhere else. My CFI has taken me now to Class Delta airports at least 4 – 6 times, and we have even done a Class Charlie (Oakland International). We have also done flight watch (getting weather), opening a VFR flight plan in flight (closing it on the phone), and flight following etc . . . so “enough” radio practice to understand what to expect.

3. I will have to check out Monterey after I get my cert, but no my instructor will not be “taking me there”. We don’t hang out or whatever and at this point are almost to checkride prep. The only XC flying I will be doing will be by myself I think.

4. Again, some flights are going on a credit card, and I can’t have any “extra” at this point. Not sure what the Bay tour is but maybe after I get my cert I will fly it with my CFI and then friends. With all the safety lately and risk management I’m not as excited to take up passengers, flying is a serious thing. Although I want to share, I’m a little bit hesitant with other people’s lives in my hands. Not sure how much I will be able to afford to fly after I get my certificate either.

5. I have been to Gnoss a lot, even took two landing lessons there with a Gnoss school. I know the “strange” turns after takeoff (noise abatement, clear the towers). Also, it is good for crosswind practice. As soon as I get my sign off to solo to other airports I will be going there. It would also be closer than Petaluma for me (I live near SF), and there are schools there with rental planes so it will help if I become familiar with the airport.

6. I know but it is getting expensive. Tonight I have a meeting / lesson with my instructor and I think he’ll talk to me about what’s left (not much).

Wow, my plane is a 1978 152 with nothing but a VOR and it is $80 + fuel surcharge, so about $94 per hour. As lost as I am on the ground and in the air, I am glad we did not have GPS and did so many XC’s via pilotage and ded reckoning . . . GPS will be a "nice to have" for me but I think old school is cool too.
