I'd like to have the above installed in my Tiger, but would like to find one at a good price. A local avionics shop gave me a quote on a new one, but indicated they'd install one I could get. Anyone have any leads or companies to call?

Thanks Len and Ken. Looks like I can save about $1K for the radio and nav head going the used/refurb route. If anybody has any other soruces, I'm all ears, I mean eyes.

Use some caution here, all Kx-155/165s are not the same. They went through changes over the years which signifgantly effect the reliability and hence your maintenance and repair costs.

Anyone know why 14v KX155's are trading at a premium to the 28v version?

Not that I mind as I'm long 2.

Thanks,

Len

Is there a way to know what your getting? Dates mfg? Serial #?

I expect to have a 28 V KX-155 w/gs sometime in the near future when I get around to upgrading my panel. I don't have the indicator though. From what I've heard these are rather plentiful as many owners are doing similar upgrades.

It goes by serial #. Ask your radio guy, he should be able to help you there. You may want to consider the 165. It has an added feature that when you pull out the nav knob, it displays the radial for the tuned nav in the stby space. This is really convenient for gauging how far it will be before you reach your tuned intercept radial so you're not just waiting for the needle to come alive. I found it handy anyway YMMV. I'm not sure of the price dif on a 165 over a 155 on the used market, might not be worth the dif if it's considerable.

Lance. My Tiger has a 14v system. Can a 28v be converted to 14v? With the premium on price that the 14v gets, probably not, but I'm not sure.

You can put a converter in between the unit and the airplane to supply the 28V. I had to do that on my Lance when we put in a 430, which at that time only came in 28V (maybe still does). Don't have the bills handy, but as I recall it was something like $600 for the converter & install.

Interesting that $600 is about the difference in asking prices for the 28v and 14v.

Ken, do you know if the converter generates significant amounts of heat?

Len, I really don't remember the details of it. It ended up being mounted in the tail cone, so heat was not relevant to my installation. And since it was an upgrade from a MX175 to a Garmin 430, which at the time was pretty new on the market, I sort of had a "whatever it takes" attitude about the installation.

Supply and demand I guess.

And that's the reason I'm just getting the 14v. Less installation hassle and the cost of the converter as you note negates the savings.

The converters use switching supply technology which is usually at least 80% efficient, and given that the radio needs on average only 10 watts of power the converter shouldn't generate more than a couple watts of heat (that's not much).

And to answer an earlier question, a 28 volt unit cannot be "converted" into a 14 v unit, the external voltage converter changes 14 volts to 28 volts.

there were 55% more 28volt units produced than the 14v as they believed in there infinite wisdom that the market trend was going to all 28 volt air craft. you can thank your local bendix/king engineer for that.

I'm in the same boat (looking for the same equipment). Some of the prices quoted here are quite good. I had the opportunity to purchase a 28V radio, but my avionics guy recommended against it. Could be done legally, but not the best idea. I can't even remember if he said why. I'll be taking a close look at radios at the show.

I can provide a KI-209 and KX-155 at below market rate. Your Guy was wronge though there is no legally sactioned service bulliten from the manufacturer to convert 28v to 14v or vise versa. I'm an avionics tech and work these radios all day.

Paul,

This is a forum. There really is no need to say the same thing over and over. We all end up reading it over and over and get sick of seeing it. By the end of the page, I'm not thinking about the guy that has a good deal..I'm thinking about the guy that keeps spamming.

Plus, the original request was THREE YEARS AGO.
