A few days ago three strays wandered into our yard. One female and two males. The males are unneutered.

A lady into pet rescue came by and gave them wormer and flea treatment and verified they were not chipped. She also took the female to foster temporarily.

Which leaves us with the two males...

They're both sweet, and Rufus would be a keeper for us if we were not already maxed out. Guessing they're both about middle-aged.

Please let me know if you might be interested. We have to keep them a week in case an owner shows up. They would have to be neutered, with some adoption fee to at least cover a portion of that and the initial vetting.

If you are interested, or know anyone who might be, please let me know at FastEddieB@mac.com.

I may be able to arrange a rescue to take them in if needed

Thanks for both offers.

We're in touch with local rescue groups we've worked with before. If nothing else we can get them on a transport to a rescue group in NJ.

Just putting them out there to forums I frequent - it's worked before!

If only one of 'em were a Doberman......

Our 11-year-old dobe's health is failing. Not sure how much longer we'll have him. Losing him will be like losing one of the kids. Maybe worse; unlike the kids, the dog actually likes me.

Sounds like the transport to a rescue group in NJ is probably where I'd have them sent. I volunteer for Rescue Dogs Rock out of NJ a lot.

Bummer, my grandparents are looking for a yellow or black lab and I got excited when I saw the title! Best of luck finding them homes!

Try www.retrieveafriend.org, a rescue local to me that specializes in sporting breeds. I have done some volunteering for them and they are a good group.

Turns out "Sparky" was actually named "Charlie", and had wandered off from home earlier on the day he showed up at our place.

Reunited with his owners tonight.

As an aside, he did have a seizure as the anesthetic kicked in for his neutering - kind of scary for us, but the vet said not uncommon.

And "Rufus" is still available and quite friendly. Let us know...

Good on ya!

Of course he was a pure breed and was purchased to be a stud ;)

I have some sad news to report...

While Karen and I were in FL, our dogs are cared for by a lady that comes by to let them in and out and feed them. But the lady who was helping us with this rescue came and got Rufus to keep while we were gone.

Karen informed me yesterday while I was flying home that Rufus had somehow gotten away from the lady keeping him and bolted into the road and was struck by a car and killed.

He one of those dogs that you know would be a "keeper" - a mild, gentle and loyal fellow that would have made someone a great pet and companion.

RIP Rufus...

That's awful. My last 4 dogs have been rescues and I when I was married we fostered (dogs).

Good that you open your home. Good for Charlie. And so sorry about Rufus.

Why did you have to add that part to the story? So sad. When I was young, our family dog got loose while we were on vacation and fatally got hit by a car. It was devastating, and still makes me sad thinking about it to this day.
