I actually got 0.8 in a local guy’s Ercoupe a couple weeks ago, it was a fun little airplane to fly and stupidly easy. It would really take an incredibly hamfisted pilot to get in trouble flying one!

I flew one back in the 80's. An American Airlines pilot bought one and the insurance required a CFI checkout. He found me because I had instructed in one, but it had rudder pedals and was a later model. Insurance bought me off, so I gave him the checkout. We set down and went over the thin manual and I added what little I knew then we flew it. Back then I flew several types of airplanes new to me without a check out, can't do that now and have insurance cover you. On the first Ercoupe, I remember on a dual cross-country where we lost the mechanical fuel pump and had to return on the header tank. It did not hold much so we had to make a couple of unscheduled fuel stops.

The challenge isn't flying one. It's landing in a crosswind with no rudder pedals. Everything you were previously taught is wrong. did a checkout with a very experienced pilot who was delivering a friend's to a buyer. He figured it out quickly with a few tips. We had lots of fun.

I flew a 415C years ago for about an hour with an older guy who had no medical. He was getting ready to sell the airplane. (He showed me how to spin it.) The next weekend I happened to come out to the airport when a prospective buyer was there. “David can fly a demo with you, he’s all checked out in the airplane.” So I got another half hour.

Fast forward 20-some years, and my boss was selling an Alon for a customer as part of a divorce settlement. Being highly experienced in Ercoupes I was tasked with demoing and checking the buyer out.

I really want an Ercoupe. Does anyone have one that they want to give me, with a weekly stipend for fuel, oil, and other costs? I'll fly it lots, and treat it nice, and send lots of pictures! Pretty please?
